Publisher's summary

After fourteen years of wrongful imprisonment, merchant sailor Edmond Dantès escapes his grim island fortress. With the promises of youth erased and his betrothed now married to someone else, Dantès lives for one purpose: revenge. Thanks to a benevolent prison confidante who reveals the location of a hidden treasure, Dantès buys his way, unrecognized, into society. Adopting a new identity as the Count of Monte Cristo, he sets out to destroy the rivals who framed him for treason. But the count’s obsessive quest could have irrevocable consequences for the innocent - and for himself.

What unfolds is an epic tale of breathtaking intrigue and righteous retribution from Alexandre Dumas, the nineteenth-century master of high adventure.

Best narrated version on Audible

This has the best narration. I tried two other versions but they had bad audio quality or monotone narration. This narrator is great and gives unique voices to each character and is consistently strong throughout.

Intriguing classic with perfect narration!

Guy Mott has with this performance become one of my favourite narrators. Works at normal and 2x speed for me and was a pleasure to listen to.

Great, But Very Long

Since the author of this book is long gone, my review will be about the narrator of this great classic. The last time I read this book was when I was in college which was many, many years ago. I had forgotten a lot of it except for the gist of the book. I didn’t realize how many characters you had to keep track of and what they did to Edmon. It did get confusing at times and I had to rewind a little bit to listen to it again.

Saying all that, it has been a pleasure listening to this because of Guy Mott. I don’t know how in the world he came up with all the voices to all the characters, but there was NOT one voice that sounded the same. To say that he was fantastic would be an understatement. My favorite voice was of the young Edmond who was so excited about life. As the reader, you know what’s going to happen to him and it’s just so heartbreaking.

I had gone through all the samples of all the audiobooks that were offered and I found that this narrator was the best. It’s a long book. It took me about three weeks to listen to it because I’d listen on the way to work.

If you enjoy the old Classics, then I recommend this audiobook. It would be great to listen to on a long road trip. I felt like I was watching a movie. I did speed it up a little because he is a slower reader, but I truly felt like I was listening to more than one person. Great job, Guy!

Great narrative. Great use of accents.

He uses accents to depict different characters from different countries. Not difficult to understand and can tell who is speaking by the different voices he uses. Doesn't take away from the story at all.

Great story

Very fun, each chapter is a complete story so it’s easy to break up such a long book. Though early on the book is harder to get through and the story progresses much fast towards the end so don’t get discouraged if you get confused with characters and who’s who, typically they get reintroduced and explained as they become relevant to the plot.

Incredible Performance

I’ve always loved this book but am challenged to read it as often as I would like.

That changed with Guy Mott’s narration. He brings a brilliant performance to an equally brilliant work. He makes accessible what I have struggled for years to access.

Very compelling

I loved this book! Masterful job by the narrator of doing different voices. Very compelling story. It is slow at a couple points, but it's easier to get past when you're listening rather than reading. I'm reading through the classics and am very pleased to add this book to my list.

WOW

I was worried to explore a narration of my favorite book for fear that it would not do justice to how I hear the story in my mind from my own reading. But I am now in love with this narrator. Tone, tempo, cadence, and differentiation of the characters is all superbly done. It has allowed me to continue enjoying my book while my hands and eyes are forced to pursue other tasks such as chores or long drives.

Just well done!

Classic - lengthy but good

A classic that I’d never read that was available as a free audiobook. Story was great, the performance was outstanding, and long enough to take a whole month to finish and get me to my next free book credit! #winning

Clever narration of a classic

I think the narrator did a a clever job of taking on the many faces and disguises of Edmund Dantes in this unabridged version of Dumas’ classic. If you’re use to a modern version of this story, you’ll need to get use to Dumas use of syntax as he weaves a gripping story of, greed, jealousy, envy, revenge, retribution, guilt, remorse, and more. Basically everything that makes the superb tale of the misfortune Dantes incarceration and eventual escape from the Chateau D’If, and how he gets his own back.

Poorly performed

Would not recommend this version. I found the performance both hammy and odd. Making a dated book hard to engage with.

Poor narration and interpretation of characters

No idea why the narrator thought it was a good idea to come up with very thick foreign accents for almost everybody in the book. In some cases, very poor judgement in even thinking they’d have an accent when they were talking in their local language. It’s very distracting and instead of adding value it took away some of the connection I had with the characters personas. Also there was a bad interpretation as to how some characters would express themselves e.g. somebody who’s well read wouldn’t talk like a ruffian.

An exciting adventure i frequently revisit!

I have nothing to complain about regarding this title. The narration is performed incredibly. The lighthearted tone Guy Mott has mastered further heightens the bursts of riveting suspense that defines Dumas’ Masterpiece. The slight changes in pronounciation and dialects easily draws me in, bringing the book to life. I have listened to this several times and find Guy Motts voice soothing and flexible, i can listen at a faster speed without losing pronounciation and the audio quality leaves nothing to be desired.

Narrator not good for me.

I could not stand narrator's voice so changed versions of the book to a much more pleasing narrator.
