Publisher's Summary

Get all four books in the Contingency War Series for one low price. Hours of epic space opera action and adventure with unique heroes and twists that you won’t see coming!

The series includes: The Contingency, The Way Station Gambit, Rise of Nimrod Fleet, and Earth’s Last War.

From book one:

No-one comes in peace. Every being in the galaxy wants something and is willing to take it by force. The Hedalt were no different. They came from the distant reaches of the galaxy to wage war. Their fleet wanted to take Earth for its prize, but we were ready. We were stronger.

For years, we fought them, ship-to-ship, until we scattered their forces and drove them back. Pursuing the Hedalt fleet to their home world, we delivered the decisive blow. We nuked their planet and wiped them out for good.

Or so we thought.

For decades, Earth Fleet sent out Deep Space Recon missions to scour the galaxy and clean up the remnants of the Hedalt Empire. Eventually, we found only ghosts - empty outposts and long-dead colonies. But, close to the edge of known space, I - Captain Taylor Ray - and my crew are about to make a discovery that will change everything.

The war isn’t over. The war has yet to begin.

poor tactics/decision making ignorant of physics

The author must be new to the genre. He writes pitiful military scenarios. His character development and interaction is surprisingly tolerable, though. The narrator is not the worst i've heard. He tends to voice through his nose on a few characters. It is quite annoying. Ogden writes his story as a submarine in water, not a ship operating inside a vacuum. Sound can not travel through a vacuum. There is no oxygen in a vacuum. You can not swim through a vacuum as if you were in a pool of water. Nor can a ship steer in a vacuum by using air molecules putting pressure against wings, air foils, and wing flaps. There are NO molecules in space. It is a vacuum. Ogden must believe the Deep Black is filled with water because his physics and ships only operate as he describes within a body of water. It is embarrassing listening to this book.
Spend your $$$ on works by Ryk Brown, A.G. Riddle, Dalzelle, Anspach and Yanez. They follow the basic and theoretical laws of physics. They also carry the reader through smooth flowing action scenes that follow logical and proven tactics and combat scenarios.

Give it time. I almost returned this book....

The book starts slow. The story seems boring. BAM
then it kicks you in the head. I will update this when I finish the book.

Great story!

I enjoyed this story very much! Just when you think you have the story figured out, Ogden changes it on you. The characters are believable and memorable. I hope Ogden continues writing in this universe with these characters.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Too painful to finish

I don’t even know where to start...Ok here after being attacked they get their ship shot up because they ignore a energy spike from a guard tower ??? They are along range recon ship, they lose contact with earth and then think no one will come looking... Well if your recon ship is looking for trouble finds it, and is destroyed, then you know they found something and you would want to send a ship to see what took out your ship

meh performance and writing.

As others have said the story line itself is interesting. The books however are let down, by very shallow and unbelievable characterisation and dialogue that really belongs in a cartoon not a book.

If you are 12 and want to listen to something. Go for it. The vocab wont stretch you and the story line is simple enough.

Doug Tisdale Jr. is ok. Although, he managed to make everyone sound more or less the same. Well other than the evil supervillans of the story who somehow got an Great British accent that would make Dick van Dyke cringe. That and it took a long while until I could ignore the peculiar way he pronounced his "O"s. Maybe he has some Canadian in him.

In the end the only thing that kept me going through these pulp paperbacks was the story-line that was a little different.

Oh How They Laughed

A good narrator, each character was easily identified.
The story was ok (ish) didn’t go into to much background history so was an easy listen if you like that sort of thing.
But OMG the author had the characters laughing at every situation. I think it was to try to give them a depth but it didn’t work, it just got sooooo annoying . Almost every incident/ conversation ended with “ he burst out laughing” or she laughed. I almost returned the book but decided I would see it through to the end as the story was mildly gripping.
Ignore the plot holes, ignore the incessant laughing, ignore the main characters slightly whiney voice and you may enjoy it, it will at least fill a few hours. Although I probably wouldn’t have bought book 2 if it hadn’t been a box set.
Also try not to root for the villain......

Can’t listen to one more second!!

I’ve never written a review, on any audiobook I’ve purchased because for the vast majority are very well written and fun.

After eight hours of listening to this audiobook, I had to take a break of audible for a few days due to the headache it left.

My main complaints are as followed.
1. The description of the book and what happens in the book don’t match.
2. The writing style is very detailed and I found myself wanting to skip to the point.
3. I found myself getting lost in what was going on due to the poor writhing. I couldn’t visualise what was actually happening.

Overall I wouldn’t suggest this series to anyone who’s looking for a military Sci Fi, as I believe that the description of the book is very miss leading.
