Publisher's summary

These are the first five episodes of Anne McCaffrey's fascinating saga of Pern — in which listeners learn about the earliest days of Pernese history. Beginning with the very first ever Dragonriders of Pern adventure, join the original survey team as they explore Pern and recommend it for colonization. Share the terror of the evacuation from the Southern Continent as a flotilla of ships — aided by intelligent, talking dolphins — braves the currents of the Pernese ocean. Learn how the famous Ruatha Hold was founded. Thrill with the dragonriders as they expand into a second, then a third Weyr. And discover a secret lost in time — the rescue of some of the original colonists before the planet was cut off forever.

This is a collection of short stories expanding on other Pern Novels. I had read a couple in the past but a thoroughly enjoyable bit of nostalgia and past Pern history. Even new characters!

Had quality

I'm really disappointed by the quality of the audio. Volume changes, missing audio. Very poor performance. I really don't recommend this for Pern lovers, it's not worth the price.

Reader and audio very inconsistent

tl;dr - reader needs (re-)training; audio need remixing.

The story is good enough (doesn't rank very high on my "Pern" list) but the audio and reader combine to make this very hard to listen to:

The audio is muffled and woolly; it's hard to understand what's being said if there is any ambient noise in the listening environment. I had to crank the treble, and drop the base just to make it intelligible. It's not unlike listening to a conversation in the next room but with the door closed.

Then there's the reader. She paces things well enough, and her reading cadence feels pretty normal, but she drops her pitch at the ends of sentences -- almost to "vocal fry" levels -- and often lowers her loudness as well (low pitch+low volume=low intelligibility), yet other parts of the same sentence are so loud that you don't dare turn up the volume for fear of blowing out your ears or speakers. So frustrating and distracting.

I love the Pern books, and this story provides some nice background and history ... but it's such a poor listen. SMH
