Publisher's summary

She’s the woman of his dreams. If only she didn’t despise him...

Everything has always come easily to Caleb James. Everything, that is, but Mary Walker. Her stunning beauty and independent nature enticed him from the start and yet, every romantic overture he made went so horribly awry that she can now barely tolerate him. But that’s all about to change. He has the perfect plan to redeem himself. When she arrives at his family estate, he’ll finally be able to win her heart. Too bad he’s not the only one there with the very same idea...

The last thing Mary wants is time alone with the insufferable Caleb. But since he’s one of her twin’s best friends, declining his invitation is out of the question. She’ll just have to do her best to ignore the charismatic, overly confident rogue. Only, he’s not acting like a rogue this time. Surely the little glimpses she catches of his softer, kinder side are an act...right?

Can Caleb and Mary overcome years’ worth of misunderstandings and missteps - not to mention a persistent rival for Mary’s affections - to find their very own happily ever after? Or, when all is said and done, will the charming rogue be left alone once again?

This regency era romance is a stand-alone novel and the third book in The Pathways to Romance series. It is rated "G" and features an enemies-to-lovers story line.

Sweet and clean

Sweet, clean regency-era story about learning to appreciate differences and overcome judgemental attitudes--a pretty universal theme for any era. The narrator was not my favorite, unfortunately.

Misunderstandings abound in this courtship

Story: (4 stars)

Just when the misunderstandings are about to be too much, and she is starting to seem downright shrewish, the heroine FINALLY gets a clue. The hero is adorably smitten and his every attempt to impress his hoped-for love, goes awry, even though for the longest time he thinks his Cupid’s arrows have hit their mark. An enjoyable regency story.

Narrator (3.5 stars)

A true British accent, good expression, Ms. Green reads a bit slowly, but once one adjusts, it’s as if one has stepped back in time to a slower, simpler era. Her sing-song cadence is unique. You will never mistake her voice for anyone else’s!

okay

It seemed like much ado about nothing. The story was protracted and seemed to go in circles. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator was okay.

You'll enjoy it best if you've followed the series

As with the previous book in this series, The Charming Rogue starts off right where The Duke and The Damsel ended. In it, we find the story between Mr. Caleb James and Ms. Mary Walker. Of course, as a reader who has been following these books closely, I found it intriguing that after all this time, even though Mr. James has always been talking (and been teased by his friends) for his affections for Ms. Walker, that said character actually didn't correspond his feelings and rather had a firm dislike of him. Thus, I really enjoyed how the author threw these two together, and how that created the most interesting outcomes.

I liked Mary's change of heart, and how she (finally) learned, I think, not to judge someone so quickly, or not jump to conclusions. The romance was really sweet, and I really liked the ending. I also liked how through each book in this series, the reader can certainly see the growth of the author's writing. And while this book isn't one of her P&P adaptions, I felt it had certain nuances from it :)

Of course, a great part of my enjoyment while reading/listening to this book came from its narrator since she did a great job with all the voices from the different characters (I certainly liked Ms. Walker's and Mr. James'), and how she managed to convey most of the nuances and emotions the characters were feeling. ~ 4.5 stars

Caleb & Mary

Book 3 in the series, it’s the story of Caleb and Mary. Caleb has loved Mary for years, but all his efforts have been disastrous and have drawn results opposite of what he’d hoped. Basically, Mary can’t stand him.

The book is a miss-mash of miscommunications, false assumptions, and prejudices. Mary was hard for me to like. She’s a selfish brat, and rude to Caleb and her brother. It wasn’t until late in the story that the relationships changed. There were some things left not completely tied up, although there was some veiled closure.

I liked the book because I’ve been waiting to read Caleb’s story. He’d been in love with Mary since before the first book. If you’ve read the series so far, you’ll want to read this too. Cinnamon is always an author that I enjoy.

I listened to this on Audible also and was quite disappointed with the narrator. Her voice sounded sing-song to me and, in my opinion, hurt the story. I cannot recommend the audio version.

Fun addition to Pathways to Romance series

Fun story. Her misperceptions, his unrequited love... While this book can be read as a standalone, much of the background to the story and depth to secondary characters is found in the other books in the series. This was one of the better stories in the series, in my opinion.

Clean regency

I thought this was a cute book. Great story line and I liked the characters. I don’t usually like this narrator at all but she did ok on this one. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I had read it (instead of listening to it) though.

a good story

I enjoyed this story with all the characters within. The main characters were Mary Walker and Caleb James.

Mary Walker is a stunning beauty and has a independence nature. While walking around a park with a friend they see someone that they know. They stop and are invited to have some of the picnic that is laid out. While talking to these friends a guy that she knows show up. She not happy about it.

Caleb James is walking around with a friend. They decided to visit the park and see if they can find anyone that they know. When they do see someone they decided to visit them. He is happy because there is a lady that he like is there. He been trying for years for her to notice him.

This was a fun story to read or listen to. It had action and drama throughout. It had a few giggles within.

I received a complimentary audio copy via StoryOrigin. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

Cute story, struggled with the narration

I liked the story in this book. I found it interesting enough to continue listening, even though I did struggle slightly with the narration. I found the speaking to not be incredibly clear, and the voice was just not as easy for me to listen to. But I'm sure that's more of a personal preference. I do feel, however, that the narrator did pretty well with inflection and character voices.
I also found myself somewhat confused with the thoughts and actions of characters at times. But I would be very interested in reading a hard copy version of this book to see if I could enjoy it better.
Overall, I think it's worth a try! Some of the things I found confusing or disliked might not bother someone else at all.

A Sweet Regency Story

I received a free code via StoryOrigin and downloaded the story from Audible.com and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am always looking for a good Pride and Prejudice variation and this story did not disappoint! It is a clean regency romance and I really enjoyed listening to it. This is a standalone within a series which I like, since I have not yet read the first two books. Through misunderstandings and a good dose of prejudice along the way, Mary and Caleb struggle to find their way to true love. This is a fun regency romp which was a delight to listen to!
