Publisher's summary

When an affluent railcar owner disappears with millions of dollars belonging to Moose County investors, the international police launch an intense investigation to find the fugitive. But journalist detective Jim Qwilleran and his feline crime-busters find a mystery to unravel that is closer to home: Who blew the whistle on the embezzler — and why?

Qwill goes full steam ahead to solve the puzzle before tragedy occurs, but the case is complicated by a train wreck on the main line and a murder in a railroad tavern. With the help of Koko and Yum Yum, Qwill is about to prove that the police are on the wrong track.

Simple Story w/ Familiar Characters

In this short adventure story Jim (Mr. Q) solves another mystery with the help of his cat, Koko. It allows the reader to spend more time in Pickax with familiar characters and see Jim and Polly get through a challenge.

Earlier books are better

This is the sixth entry in the series that is available on Audible and sadly, this one feels really tired. Cozy mysteries are something I enjoy for the characters more than the plot, but they have become so formulaic here that I'm bored. Too much time is spent on exposition that has been repeated in each book, and there is virtually no action, only a very long series of conversations full of chatty small talk, facts about trains, and with or without a tiny piece of the puzzle being revealed. The cats have become background characters, merely providing the occasional yowl meant to hallmark something significant in a conversation, until the resolution, where Koko becomes an omniscient oracle and Qwill finally deciphers his message.

These books began with charm, but this story was just plain silly.
