Dominick Dunn is in people acquisition. When the phone rings he shuffles off to the far corners of the globe to retrieve the captured, then turns them over to his employer. He doesn't actually believe these people are immortal, but the pay is good and he likes to travel. Despite rumors that his quarry meets an unthinkable fate at the hands of his employer, he's content with his lot in life. Aaron Wessker is miserable. His life has not gone according to plan. Trapped in a dead end job bartending in Vegas, he longs for a family he lacks, or at least the possibility of a girlfriend. Their lives are about to intersect, causing them both to rethink their place in the world. More importantly they will have to change their opinions of the possibility of immortality. Unfortunately for both of them they will have to do this very quickly. Dunn's quarry is also being pursued by something much more deadly than his employers. Dominick Dunn is about to become the hunted and Aaron's world is about to be turned on its side.

Would you listen to The Calling Tree again? Why?

Yes, I plan on reading this story again, as it kept my interest throughout the entire story. That is a big bonus for me.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Calling Tree?

Realizing that your life is in danger: that is what Dominick Dunn realizes... and has to face that danger head on.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene ... well, pretty much the entire book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Immortal. Danger.

Any additional comments?

Nope, though this is a very well written book... each character is brought out by both the author and the narrater, and is a very enjoyable story.

Loving It

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend and have already done so! The book is interesting and different. Lots of twists and turns and a good pace throughout. Looking forward to the next in the series (but this was definitely able to stand alone, no big cliffhangers at the end of the book.) Even though I have reservations about the hero's and heroine's jobs, I found the characters likable.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It kept moving and had interesting twists.

Which scene was your favorite?

Rhea at the airport.

Great Change of Pace

They just keep getting better! The Calling Tree is my 3rd C.F. Waller book, and definitely NOT my last. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book. I could not put this one down! Loaded w/action, mystery, adventure and surprises all the way to the end. Narration by Wyatt Baker was great, he managed different voices for each character, and they were consistent, very well done!

Definitely NOT My Last C.F. Waller Book!!!

I was provided this audiobook through Audiobook Boom at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

I think this book was fascinating. The world Waller created was fresh and added a new twist to the “Immortality” theme. His writing is comprehensive with moments to chuckle and questions to ponder. Although I very much enjoyed the story, all their abrupt “endings” were pretty dismal. Research on DNA and biblical references were woven in well. The Angel/Demon and Heaven/Hell references never became apparent. I was left with wondering if there really was a good or bad side. But there was no question as to who I disliked.

There were so many people involved at the end... and that’s my main complaint. Too many unnecessary people with no distinct hero.
This is going to be hard for me to explain... sorry if it makes no sense.
When the story begins, Dominic Dunn appears to be the main character. In reality, his character wasn’t even needed. Ron-E, another on his team, was the only one to actually do anything, at least, anything important. She could have fulfilled both character’s roles. Aaron Wessker is introduced a bit later. These two turn out to be the leading characters. I think there were too many people having too many dialogs that just weren’t necessary. Any information I gained from the supporting cast could have been worked into furthering relationship growths between the most important characters.

Wyatt Baker’s reading was fabulous. Hope to hear more from him.

Two Thumbs Up.

A CROWDED ARENA OF IMMORTAL DISTRUST

Have you ever listened too or read a novel where you thought it was going in one direction and went a completely different way? C.F. Waller is becoming one of my favorite authors quickly. Every time I listen or read another one of his novels I think I'm not going to enjoy it as much as his others and BAM, it ends up being better than the one I had already finished. The Calling Tree is an excellent novel about immortality. Wyatt Baker does an amazing job at expressing emotions and making each character unique.

At first not having read much on what this book was actually about and just seeing who the author was, I was thinking it was going to have some kind of vampire or other twist to it when I realized immortality was one of the main themes throughout the novel, but if that is what you are looking for then The Calling Tree is not the book for you! However, if you like novels about immortality, the true nature of humans, history and family, then The Calling Tree is a must add to your list. I read a lot of books addressing the whole immortality subject. Whether it be vampires, werewolves, making a name for themselves through art, writing or something else. There are tons on the subject, but I haven't read one until now where the subject isn't over blown, it just simply is a matter of living. This is how I would think an immortal would live their life.

You should really listen to this audio book! So far I have to admin my recommendations to now say you need to listen and read everything by C.F. Waller because I can't just pick one book from his collection that I like the most!

Another FANTASTIC novel by CF Waller

This was a fantastic book about immortality and the human condition. The book had a lot of characters and, at times, that was challenging to keep straight, but it never detracted from the experience. The narrator was decent. He had good inflection, and didn't sound like he was just reading aloud. I'll admit it was not a predictable story and I didn't know where things were going, but I sure wanted to stick with it and find out. To me, that is the true sign of a good book.

Great start of an interesting series

This audiobook is different from audiobooks I've been listening lately. I love the incorporation of biblical history intertwined with mythology. The pacing is great and the action kept me on the edge of my seat. Definitely recommend this read!

Would you listen to The Calling Tree again? Why?

Yes, just to catch the things I missed the first time. Knowing how the story goes now, I will see the things I didn't notice the first time.

What did you like best about this story?

There was more to the story than I expected. There was multiple types of characters that you don't always see in other book series.

Which character – as performed by Wyatt Baker – was your favorite?

Loved them all. Each character had their own voice, which brought them to life for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At first no, but once the story got going yes. I would find myself listening throughout the day while working.

What did you love best about The Calling Tree?

You never quite know where you are in this book. That can be good or bad, but if you let go, it takes you to some interesting places.

What three words best describe Wyatt Baker’s voice?

Precise overly enunciated. Not the best or worst, it was adequate.

Any additional comments?

This book starts pretty quickly and keeps moving through out. Sometimes it feels like you need to keep going to really understand what's going on. There are many threads that eventually come together at the end with varying degrees of success. The book ends with a bit of a cliff hanger and the second book isn't available on Audible. It is an interesting enough book to make me want to purchase the eBook.
One thing that would help is a few minutes of researching firearms terminology. You don't put a clip in a handgun, it is a magazine. You don't put a bullet in a gun (it is a cartridge), but you do dig one out of your shoulder.
I've read/listened to a few other books by C.F. Waller and overall am impressed and will continue to seek out his work.
