Fun suspenseful mystery

I have to start off saying that I didn’t notice that this was the final book in a five part series, but that didn’t really cause any issue. It seemed to stand up by itself just fine and while I’m sure there are characters I should have known more about, I didn’t think that I really needed to in order to understand what was going on.
The story was a fun one. Really liked Ivan’s character and story. Definitely want to start from the beginning to experience all that is the Town of Cold Hollow.
The narration is spot on. J. Scott Bennett has a great voice for each character and really did a fantastic job.

The Butcher

I have a sense that if I had read this series in order, I would have had a much different impression of this book. I spent much of it being somewhat confused. But for that I can only blame myself, as I did start this series on book 5! Outside of being a little lost, I found this story to be outrageously different from things I normally read, which are within this genre as well. I intend to go back to the beginning and consume this series in the right way! Bennett delivers a good performance.

Now I need to listen to the rest of the series

Any additional comments?

This review copy audiobook was provided by the narrator free of charge via Audiobook Boom. I have provided this review voluntarily. Samuel comes to town to retrieve the remains of his deceased sister and to find out what really happened to her. His investigation doesn't sit well with some of the townsfolk who would rather have Samuel just leave. Closed door meetings, whispered conversations and secret plots lead to what I thought would be the end, but no, Ms. Howard has a surprise in store. Well Done! This is a thoroughly engaging suspense novel that now has me interested in the other books of the series.

The end of an era.

The final chapter in the cold hollow series brings an epic conflict to the town. The maestro vs the butcher. Much will be revealed. The minds behind the town reveal the possibilities of more to come. A truly magnificent series that was completely novel and the narration was awesome. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Great series - I'm sad this is the last book

This is such an entertaining book. I've read all the books in this series, and I was disappointed to learn that this one would be the final book in the series. It has such a unique blend of dark humor and horror. Its filled with interesting characters and entertaining situations. If you enjoy horror and dark humor, I highly recommend the series. I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by J. Scott Bennett. I'm always very impressed with his narrations because he really brings the characters to life.

Creepy Twisted Ending

I’m so disappointed! This is the last of the series. I love all of the Cold Hollow characters especially Myrna, Tom, Liam, Chief Hanover and now Ivan as well as many of the town’s residents. It was a great suspenseful fun mystery series that I feel should be continued. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. THANK YOU!

Great end to the series

This last book in the Cold Hollow was thoroughly entertaining. A great mix of suspense, humour, love and violence. The storyline follows on directly from the prior book, as Patricia’s evil brother comes to Cold Hollow to seek revenge for his sisters death. In a community whose majority of citizens are “reformed” murderers, this is not as easy as he expects. I love the eclectic characters in this series, it’s amazing how the author made you adore killers! Their interpersonal relationships are warm, tender and often very amusing but take care if you cross them because violence and killer instincts lingers just below the surface. J Scott Bennett did an excellent job of the narration. He really gives them individual voices and brought the characters to life. He did the various accents very well and definitely added to the enjoyment of this story. This last book does not disappoint, it has lots of suspense, intrigue, humour, violence, love and heart wrenching loss. I really am sad to say good to all the characters that I have grown to love in this unique town. It is an unusual and very enjoyable story.

Keep up the good work, mayor.

Cold Hollow is a pleasant little town visited, and loved, by tourists. But beneath the surface it is not quite all it appears to be and it's relatively peaceful life is threatened by the arrival of two men, one the brother of a resident who had recently died in a fire, the other his bulky servant, Ivan. Samuel had come to take his sister's remains home to New York - and to take revenge on those Cold Hollow inhabitants he believed had murdered her.

Of course, he was right. His sister's death had not been a natural one. But then, most of the permanent residents of Cold Hollow were far from 'natural'. From Myrna, the mayor to the lady who ran the pastry shop, they all had secrets in their past, some of these secrets even still held from the other members of this affectionate 'family' of citizens. And everyone in this tight knit group of the "pleasantly corrupt town" was in agreement: Samuel had to be "handled."

Emilie J.Howard's, The Butcher, is the last in the Cold Hollow series and, although completely stand alone, is definitely enhanced with familiarity of the somewhat bizarre locals and their previous histories. The delightful characterisations are given even greater depth and life with J.Scott Bennett's excellent narration and his very pleasantly accented voice delivers the text flawlessly with perfect pacing, understanding and intonation. A great symbiosis of author and narrator.

Essentially, this book has everything: well written with extremely interesting characters, humour, sometimes with laugh out loud moments, emotion, mystery, and a rattling good story all read superbly. A fitting end to a most enjoyable and unexpected series. Try it and see.
