Number one New York Times best seller

From the author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light comes a “powerful” (The Washington Post) novel about the choices that alter the course of our lives.

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw 15 years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, their beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, in which she helps ease the transition between life and death for her clients. But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a career Dawn once studied for but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made.

After the crash landing, the airline ensures that the survivors are seen by a doctor, then offers transportation to wherever they want to go. The obvious destination is to fly home, but she could take another path: Return to the archaeological site she left years before, reconnect with Wyatt and their unresolved history, and maybe even complete her research on The Book of Two Ways — the first known map of the afterlife.

As the story unfolds, Dawn’s two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried with them. Dawn must confront the questions she’s never truly asked: What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this Earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices...or do our choices make us? And who would you be if you hadn’t turned out to be the person you are right now?

Indecisive character

Typically, I enjoy books by Jodi Picoult but the character in this book was the weakest, most indecisive, repellent person.

The book is about a person who does not have the ability to make a committed decision and equivocates her entire adult life about which to love and with whom to spend a life. Weak men unconditionally love a woman who cannot decide between the two men so the book is spent extolling the virtues and downfalls of both men. The woman cannot decide if she is a good parent either. In essence, a book about a woman who wants both real and imagined lifetimes. She is a vacuous person with no depth.

The book was extremely frustrating and ended in the same weak, indecisive way - you spend hours listening to the book and you are left hanging at the end.

The author seemed to be working very hard to make parallels and the analogies are transparent and lack depth.

absolutely loved!

This book pulls you in and doesn't let you go! I missed the characters when I wasn't reading it, and there are some wow moments that throw you. The ending I did not expect, and usually prefer things tied up in a perfect bow but this ending left me wanting to discuss it with others so I have recommended it countless times. So, so good! Highly recommend.

Timeline Magic

I was delightfully confused until the very end of this story. Picoult does not disappoint. This story or love, loss, and time will teach you something you didn’t know you needed to learn.

Good story

The overly technical detailed Egyptian history almost turned me off at the beginning of the book. I'm glad I stuck with it. It had a good story.

Great story with great characters. I didn’t want it to end.

This book would be very sad to listen to if you had had a recent death in your life. She describes the feelings so well that it touches your heart with perspectives that you cannot see when grieving. The Egyptian part of the story was fascinating.

TMI!!!defintely...TMI!!!

Working on my second novel myself I can understand how much work goes into learning a subject before writing about it however there was so much information on Egyptology on this I probably could get three credits at Yale. In addition I don’t know why she felt it necessary to hit the popular touch tones of today —all three of which had absolutely nothing to do with the story… Her first husband‘s mothers survival of the holocaust, attending the death of a transgender person and possible rape—-puhleeze!

the book of two ways is excellent

I totally enjoyed this book written by one of my favorite authors. I did not know much about Egyptology before listening to this audible book. I plan to listen to it a second time.

Excellent story, Excellent narration

Another masterpiece by Jodi Picoult with fantastic narration by Patti Murin. Really good story, meaningful, thought-provoking, educational, lovely, suspenseful, would be fantastic for a book club as there is so much good material to discuss. SO GOOD.
