Publisher's Summary

The Book of Forgiving, written together by the Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and his daughter Revd Mpho Tutu, offers a deeply personal testament and guide to the process of forgiveness. All of us have at times needed both to forgive and be forgiven - whether small, everyday harms or real traumas. But the path to forgiveness is not easy, and the process unclear.

How do we let go of resentment when we have been harmed, at times irreparably? How do we forgive and still pursue justice? How do we heal our hearts? How do we heal the harm we have caused others? And how do we forgive ourselves? Drawing on his memories of reconciliation in post-apartheid South Africa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu offers four concrete steps to forgiving and being forgiven:

  • 1) Admitting the wrong and acknowledging the harm
  • 2) Telling one's story and witnessing the anguish
  • 3) Asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness
  • 4) Renewing or releasing the relationship

Each chapter contains reflections and personal stories, as well as exercises for practising each step of the path. The Book of Forgiving is a touchstone and tool for anyone seeking the freedom of forgiveness: an inspiring guide to healing ourselves and creating a more united world.

It's ok

I'm not sure about the concept of forgiving, depending on the philosophy you have but this book give some interesting inside to consider.
It's a bit slow but it's always an interesting book to consider.

Choose carefully

Excellent if you need convincing or reassuring about the power of forgiveness. The practical elements would barely fill a page. And I can’t take the stone rituals seriously.

Amazingly thought provoking and insightful

The life lessons that this book gives has the potential to be life changing! I know I'll have to listen to it again because there are so many nuggets to consider & to be frank I'm bit quite there yet. I certainly have a better understanding of the power of forgiveness now.

Interesting book, very real and raw in places

I found this whole book to be very thought provoking and uplifting because of what happens when you forgive. And some incredibly moving true stories.

I would have liked to have given it 5/5, but unfortunately I found the female narration very stilted / monotonal and therefore a bit irritating. However, this only represents about 10% of the narration.

I am very glad I persevered.
