Publisher's Summary

An enchanted blade. An evil old man. An ancient spirit.

The Weird West just gets weirder.

Hucksters Orville and Jimmy struggle to buy a decent meal.

When an old man asks for help with a supernatural pest, Orville smells opportunity. Jimmy smells danger.

And danger is what they find. Jimmy must retrieve an enchanted knife, while fighting a huge coyote, a shapeshifting opossum, and an ancient spirit determined to keep the blade where it is, all to save Orville from the old man's clutches.

The Black Blade is a weird western in Jeff Chapman's Huckster Tales series, mixing fantasy, comedy, and horror in an Old West setting. Climb up in the wagon and follow Orville and Jimmy as they once again plunge over their heads into supernatural trouble.

The weird west.

This is not really my kind of book. But I enjoyed the action, the mystery and especially the humor. Grandma's life lessons are worth the price of this book alone! Set in the weird west with very likeable and quirky characters. Alot of weird imagination went into this novel.
The narrator has lots of voices and did an excellent job performing this book. He's very easy to listen to.

Loved this story

This was a great story. The characters were well developed & very likable. The story flowed nicely & it was enjoyable. The villain was evil and so was his monster. The best part was the narrator. He did an awesome job! I highly recommend this story.

Old time tale with supernatural elements

I don't really know what to say about this book. It isn't my kind of story and at times I found it a bit disturbing. I don't mind supernatural so much and a bit of violence or bloodshed is ok with me but the combination of characters and supernatural happenings for some reason didn't set well with me. I listened to this book because David Bosco is one of my favorite narrators and he didn't disappoint me at all with this one. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

Old West Story with Paranormal

I listened to this book on Audible. First one of the characters The Huckster is a rather Large man who sounds like W.C. Fields, which really made me laugh. The Main Character Jimmy is apprentice to Orvile the Huckster. Jimmy talks like a Southern boy, But he uses $0.25 cent words just in naturally speaking which seem strange when your hearing him speak. The story is fine and unusual and I want to listen to more like this. Narrator did a wonderful job and I believe he had fun doing this recording.

Old West feel with supernatural elements

The Black Blade (A Huckster Novel) by Jeff Chapman and narrated by David Bosco is a fun listen. If you enjoy the setting of the Old West mixed with supernatural, this is def the book for you. 4 ½ stars for story, 5+ stars for narration.

What’s it about? Orville and Jimmy are performing their usual when a man of sorts approaches them with a job to rid his house of a curse. Being Orville likes coins, he says yes, against Jimmy’s protest. From there, the adventure begins. You get magic, shifters, spirits, meet some people and form friendships, battling the bad, amusing sayings from Jimmy’s grandma, and more. It’s a book that you enjoy for the tale, not necessarily the character development. It’s an amusing story that you should give a listen.

The narrator, David Bosco, surprised me with this one. I actually had to confirm I was listening to the correct book as there were new voices I have yet to hear from David. His range of voices still amazes me. Even if this is not a story you would typically listen to, you should listen for David’s narration alone.

“You don’t wash a pure heart in a pond fouled with manure, my grandma said.”
“Fishing for gratitude is like fishing without bait.”
“A cutthroat who acts your friend is more dangerous than a dozen who come at you in the open.”

Overall, I recommend as this book has a nice mix of horror, comedy, and fantasy with an Old West feel.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: some violence and death- it’s in an Old West style setting so you will hear mentions of hangings. Language used: hell x12.

Grandma

This book could not have been written without grandmas wisdom. There is humor magic shape shifters all within the western era which without grandma wisdom would not have been possible.
I loved every minute of the tale. And the narrator nailed the characters. I highly recommend this book.

A young Stephen King in the making

If ya every read The Dark Tower series by Stephen King this novel is abit similar set in western time with magic and quick draws between life and death. The novel was abit rushed in the early ch but work out the qinks greatly do I do think the finale battle could have been more climatic then mild adventure I felt in it.

Amusing Western

I normally do not listen to western books but gave this one a try due to the narration and surprise I did enjoy it as not the conventional western, it has supernatural components and humorous. I enjoyed the characters od Jimmy and Orville with their shenanigans but do not like the Pig man. I was given this free review copy audiobook and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

An Odd Quirky Tale

Jeff Chapman has written a creative and strange tale that I found amusing and fun. Jeff writes stories that create movies in my imagination as his characters are so relatable and his settings have just the right amount of detail. I enjoyed this story very much. I recommend this book to others who enjoy this genre. David Bosco's narration was excellent and entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
