Historical Urban Fantasy!

Expect to be introduced to Bram Gold and escape to a mystical urban fantasy world. But surprise, not only be entertained by the nonsensical world but, be immersed in the factual history of the Bronx. DeCandido thanks his time working at the U.S. Census Bureau from 2009-10 for allowing him to explore his home borough and it’s history. And he steeps this story with figures, facts, and places to create his unique fantasy. If you’re not a history buff don’t be afraid of this read. He crafts these tidbits so neatly that they are layers of the story and blend so well they add dimension. If you love to learn about New York this is a fun way to scavenge out details. DeCandido has, for me,created a “divine image” (wink, wink) by weaving so much historical data. I look forward to DeCandido and Clark in this series.

This book has made me an urban fantasy fan

This was not my usual read. I like urban fantasy but I am really picky. This book did not disappoint. I loved the real life feel with the fantasy aspect. And I found myself laughing out loud so many times. Before I knew it the book was over and I'm wanting more of Bram Gold! This narrator does a great job with different accents. I forgot that it was one person and not multiple people. This is a must read/listen for all urban fantasy fans. You will be hooked and wanting more, like me. Thankfully this is a series.

Essentially Fantasy Men in Black

The first third of this book was hard to get through, I had little interest in the characters, I wasn't sure where the story was going, and the accents the narrator used for the ethnically diverse cast of characters got grating quickly. But after I got into the meat of the story and it focused more on the main character I enjoyed my time with it. I was given this book for free but if I had paid a credit for it I'm not sure if I would keep it or not. My favorite part of the book though was the passionate speech from the author after the story was over talking about the importance of the area the story took place in. That message helped me see the passion the author had for his story.

fantastic book. there was never a dull moment. I very much enjoyed the ultimate villain.

Great audio book

I absolutely loved this audio book! The story line was great. The places were well written as they are there in real life. Really enjoyed the characters and did not see that ending coming. The narrator also did a great job with the various voices, accents and all around bringing the book to life.

Wow- a fun read with great narration

Story- this was a fun read for me. Not something I would normally pick up, mostly because I read a lot of nonfiction. However, I love the premise and this is the kind of tv shows I like to watch, so it was wonderful to listen to it while driving!
The NY Bronx slayer/hunter/Corsair(?) explanation was funny to me and there was a lot of local history and also culture references. I’m not from NY but it would have been even more interesting if I knew the areas being referenced. The author also talked about how he decided on the area in the notes at the end.

Narrator- I love a story with great narration! It makes it come alive, and I felt like I was inside the story all the way. There was a great distinction between characters and well done accents. I also appreciated that the narration didn’t get quieter during some sections. I’ve noticed it a lot with less experienced narrators/authors who come to the end of their section and sound quieter like they haven’t breathed enough lol.

Overall a really great audiobook experience and I look forward to the sequel!

Unequaled plethora Character Voices

This review is for the narration more than for the actual novel.
I was an avid reader until my health and eyesight were affected by a rare disorder. I now depend on audio books to fulfill my need to read. I had exactly two narrators I enjoyed until this novel.
This storyline is a great fantasy set in an area of New York typically overlooked. There is a someone or several someones killing immortals. It is a great mystery that has clues from the beginning as to who it might be, especially for a former literature teacher and avid mystery/thriller reader. I

What I enjoyed most about this Audible production was the narrator's(T.J. Clark) ability to turn his voice into the characters I was envisioning as the story unfolded. From the heavy guy who squeezed himself into a sports car, to and old aunt-Rabi, the voices were amazing. I actually had to stop the book several times when new characters showed up and said something after being described, because I was laughing. Clark can change his accent from a young Jewish man in the Bronx, to a very upset woman speaking a faked Caribbean accented English...which she spoke poorly, and even an Ancient African Goddess. There were easily over a dozen characters who spoke, and by their voices alone, created by Clark, and kept exactly the same throughout the novel, I knew who was in the scene unfolding in the novel.

Clark needs to narrate for more authors.

The novel is great fun, and what I liked most was the ending. Justice did what it was supposed to, and friends stuck by each other, even in the face of something ugly confronting both of them. The author clearly wants readers to understand the difference between what is convenient and easy, and what is right as choices; ome of these choices may look the same. Many of the characters carry burdens given to them at a young age, and it is still part of their adult life. I see growth for so many of the characters and am looking forward to the next novel in the series.

Calling all urban fantasy fans!

I'm always excited for a new urban fantasy series, and this one didn't disappoint! From the diverse cast of characters to the new magical laws and systems to the fun (if slightly predictable) mystery afoot, this book is sure to satisfy any fans of THE DRESDEN FILES or TALLOW JONES. I'm loving this new wave of mystery/adventure novels with complex male leads that don't use sexism as a character crutch. Great characters all around, and it was fun to hear the masterful TJ Clark doing a whole new set of diverse accents. Seriously, is there any voice he can't do? Give this guy an Audie or something! Listening to this book in audio form definitely brought the whole thing up to another level.

The Bronx in focus

An exciting first entry into a what seems to be a solid series. Sporting excellent narration that truly brings the characters and story to life.
