Publisher's Summary

“An extraordinary work of humane imagination...call it magic realism with soul.” (Locus)

“Finely honed...always engages and frequently surprises.” (New York Times Book Review)

A man risks his soul and his sanity to save his family from malevolent forces in this brilliant novel of horror and the supernatural from the award-winning pioneer of speculative fiction and author of the classic My Soul to Keep.

When Hilton was a boy, his grandmother sacrificed her life to save him from drowning. Thirty years later, he begins to suspect that he was never meant to survive that accident, and that dark forces are working to rectify that mistake.

When Hilton's wife, the only elected African American judge in Dade County, Florida, begins to receive racist hate mail from a man she once prosecuted, Hilton becomes obsessed with protecting his family. The demons lurking outside are matched by his internal terrors - macabre nightmares, more intense and disturbing than any he has ever experienced. Are these bizarre dreams the dark imaginings of a man losing his hold on sanity - or are they harbingers of terrible events to come?

As Hilton battles both the sociopath threatening to destroy his family and the even more terrifying enemy stalking his sleep, the line between reality and fantasy dissolves....

Chilling and utterly convincing, The Between is the haunting story of a man desperately trying to hold on to the people and life he loves as he slowly loses himself.

I finished with a headache! 🤯😱😭🤕

I became so emotionally wrapped up in the James Family! Maybe because MY married Surname is James and my husband Mr James and I have 2 kids. This mix of real life "I can't Breath" Horror ( that is so relevant right now....still...) Spirituality and regular hide under the bed horror entwined with normal life experiences had me riveted! I was so tense with the next to last scene before the epilogue. The sweetness and love of the Epilogue made my throat hurt with that almost deep cry feeling! I'm still coming down from the Rollercoaster feelings that this story emerged me in. Thank you Mrs. DUE! I NEED A HOT SHOWER AND AN ICE PACK! WHEW!

Disappointed

I was excited to listen to this one after hearing from the author and seeing the other “2” reviews. It was disappointing. I didn’t like the ending at all.

my favorite Due book to date.

4.5-5 star. By far my favorite Due book I've read to date. This is the man who is split between worlds, or so he thinks as he may just be suffering from schizophrenia. The mix of scifi and psychological makes this book reach some great heights.

Some of the techniques used in this *90s* book are some favorites from much more recent work (e.g. the Undone, Haunting of Hill House in an abstract way). I wish I knew sooner this was a multiverse of sorts story because as soon as I realized (in the preface, therefore not a spoiler IMO) I was psyched and Due did not disappoint.

I listened to the *brand new* audiobook narrated by the very talented Kevin Kenerly. The audiobook is *nearly* flawlessly with only one place where it was obvious they added a word or two after the fact.

Good Story

Outstanding job Tananarive Due... very well-written story. For me, I sometimes wonder if people who passed on wandering around between Life and Death. Kevin Kenery performed a great job with the narration of the story.
