Story
The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.

Story
Princess Sun has finally come of age. Growing up in the shadow of her mother, Eirene, has been no easy task. The legendary queen-marshal did what everyone thought impossible: expel the invaders and build Chaonia into a magnificent republic, one to be respected - and feared. But the cutthroat ambassador corps and conniving noble houses have never ceased to scheme - and they have plans that need Sun to be removed as heir, or better yet, dead. To survive, the princess must rely on her wits and companions: her biggest rival, her secret lover, and a dangerous prisoner of war.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Fresh Twist To Familiar Tales
What a wonderful fantasy remix of the Holmes stories. It's like wrapping yourself in a familiar blanket at the end of a long cold day. The skeleton of the stories stay the same as the original but the meat is fresh and adds a new and delicious world to explore. I can't recommend this highly enough. I love that Addison took the long running theory and followed it through, weaving into it her boundless imagination.

Awful Narrator
I am about a quarter of the way through, and thinking of giving up on the audio and getting the kindle edition. I love Katherine Addison's writing. I must have read The Goblin Emperor 6 or 7 times.
I listen to a lot of audio books, I listen to them while I'm doing house work or knitting, or just when I am out for a walk.
I was so pleased when I found she had a new book out, and that it was available as an audio book. But the narrator is so bad at doing the voices of Crow and Lestrade that it is intrusive and spoils the story. I find I am listening to the voice and not the words, wondering why she chooses to emphasize the words she does. I wonder if she is American trying to do English?
I have only given the story 3 stars, because I haven't finished it yet, and so far its a retelling of A Study in Scarlet, so not original . The world the story is set in is steam punk.
Such a shame.
