Publisher's Summary

In The Aftermath, Julie Atwood is settling into a new normal in remote Smoky Flats, along with her son and father. While the US continues spiraling into violence and instability, Julie and her family hone their survival skills as they prepare to endure their first harsh winter in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Joining with others and building new friendships, Julie bolsters Smoky Flats' security, sense of community, and commerce among residents. Together, they protect themselves from outside intruders, mountain lions, and food shortages.

Meanwhile, back in Oregon, life for Julie's ex-husband, Steve, and his new infant worsens. He falls victim to a crumbling employment sector and housing crisis, and is forced to live in horrendous conditions while working to further a radical liberal agenda. His money and supplies are quickly dwindling, and nearby protests are becoming more violent. Before long, Steve is beholden to a local gang and their demands on him become a matter of life or death.

Although hundreds of miles apart, Julie and Steve's worlds collide when circumstances become so grim that he is forced to ask for Julie's help to save his daughter's life. Julie is now faced with a dilemma. She must weigh her moral obligation to help an innocent person against putting her own life in danger to do so.

In this second book of the A Great State trilogy, the everyday realities for those who prepared clash with the realities of those who did not. Lives are lost, and danger and uncertainty creep around every corner. Despite it all, there remains a sense of hope and renewal, and a vision for a future when people and the country can thrive again.

A different perspective

This is a great series that keeps you entertained while also teaching you some new things along the way. The part that stands out to me the most is having a book series from a female perspective. I am a husband and father to a young girl and this series provides some insight into challenges a female may encounter, which can help me to better prepare my daughter for the world we live in. Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next book.

Loved Book1, Book2 is a swing and a miss

I loved Book1, I also wanted to bash in the head of the scumbag a-hole who perpetrated such evil on the protagonist...what father wouldn't?

But Book2 wasn't a continuation of the protagonist OVERCOMING but more of coping with issues to achieve a relationship with little tid bits action sprinkled in. What was ACCOMPLISHED in this book? Was Madison rescued? Nope. Did Ned succeed at winning the love of his life? Nope. What happened with Ned's ex? Not a clue. All story lines continued until instalment.

How about solving a couple, starting a couple, and wetting our appetite for Book3.

A maturing auther

I enjoyed the first installment of this story but struggled a bit with the writing style. I am very pleased to to say that is no longer the issue. Shelby's writing style has matured within one book. This part of the story was engaging and well written. Enjoyed The Aftermath very much. Good job Shelby! Can't wait for the next book.

Rough

The story was okay but the language was over the top and there was a little bit to much... dark stuff. I understand the reality of a situation like that but we don't need all of that to get the story. I was very disappointed and won't do the next book.

This has started

Liberal Oregon politicians have started this ball rolling. I live near Eugene and have seen the changes. Sanctuary status - some of the lowest performing schools in the country - out of control PERS debt CAUSED by politicians and their bedfellows the unions and resulting lack of funding for police - onerous land use laws - some of the highest home prices in the nation - rampant homelessness (mostly substance abusers and people with mental problems). I for one will NOT be living in a tiny home, thank you.

Oregon lets it's forests burn, and will not allow timber to be salvaged. our current (2019) illustrious governer has stated forests will be ALLOWED to burn as long as they are away from homes, all the while clamping down on peoples little woodstoves and telling its citizens the sky is falling because of the CO2 gas and other pollutants from our nasty cars.

Now low information voters (populated more and more by indoctrinated liberal schools) have noted in a democratic super-majority so hang onto your wallet and your firearms!

Toss in a couple Billion dollars down the tube on the Oregon Health Plan and then legalize marijuana for the kids and you wonder what the politicians are thinking.

Shelby's books are at the top of what I would call relevant / futurist. Things are degrading so fast, I'm not sure she can keep up!

Realistic Scenario Just Got Better

This is a brief review, spoilization resistant.

To start,. this scenario organized by Shelby is one of the more realistic collapse scenarios. No EMP from the U.S government. No nukes being fired from North Korea. No space aliens taking over.

As a slow collapse, we get a view of how society crumbles in real time. Crime, riots, its all there. We also get a glimpse of price inflation that comes with a slow collapse.

For my last point, I want to point out that this book illustrates that even the prepared will struggle through a collapse and going at it by yourself might be impossible.

This is my honest review. I was not paid for it.
