Solid book

The book it self is good but it seems to have space fillers to me. Like it brings up things that don't seem to be relevant just to reach a page minimum. But overall the book was a good one.

Glamorous setting in NYC circa 1999

Jay is an up-and-coming author and performer who grew up in the projects. Billie is an assistant editor at a famous beauty magazine in NYC and grew up in the suburbs of Virginia. They cross paths when Billie attends one of Jay’s shows with her friend in publishing who wants to sign a book deal with him. Their chemistry and attraction is immediate. A major theme in the story is their vastly different backgrounds and how they find common ground through literature, movies and shared values of hard work and diligence. It’s a great historical record of glamorous NYC in 1999, when Prince and Whitney were still alive and the twin towers were still standing. The many pop culture references and name dropping feels like visiting a time capsule. There are many movie, music and literary references, like “you need to be Thomas Crowned” or “nobody puts Billie in a corner.” Since I would be a contemporary of Billie, that aspect of the book was highly relatable to me. I was especially interested in the article Billie was working on about Fashion Week’s theme of “ethnic borrowing” since “ethnic appropriation” has been a hot media topic in recent years as well. And the description of the Brazilian wax was so funny that I played it back for my husband to listen. The narration is outstanding, with excellent delivery and use of accents and voices to differentiate between characters. Overall a well-written and humorous romance with a happily-ever-after.
