Story
The Jungle Tales of Tarzan, book six of the Tarzan series, consists of 12 short stories loosely connected to each other, although each one can stand on its own. They fill in many details of Tarzan's youth and adolescence in the jungle, while still living with the tribe of great apes that reared him. Mr. Burroughs, much like Gene Roddenberry half a century later, was able to make very trenchant comments on our life and society by setting his stories outside our normal recognizable world.

In Pal-ul-don Tarzan finds a real Jurassic Park filled with dinosaurs, notably the savage Triceratops-like Gryfs, which, unlike their prehistoric counterparts, are predatory. Jane is also being held captive in Pal-ul-don, where she becomes a pawn in a religious power struggle.

Story
Tarzan had renounced his right to the woman he loved, and civilization held no pleasure for him. After a brief and harrowing period among men, he turned back to the African jungle where he had grown to manhood. It was there he first heard of Opar, the city of gold, left over from fabled Atlantis. It was a city of hideous men - and of beautiful, savage women, over whom reigned La, high priestess of the Flaming God. Its altars were stained with the blood of many sacrifices. Unheeding of the dangers, Tarzan led a band of savage warriors toward the ancient crypts and the more ancient evil of Opar.

My favorite of all time

Publisher's Summary
Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar is number five in the Tarzan series. In this standalone novel, Tarzan, Lord Greystoke, finds himself financially embarassed. He decides to return to the treasure city of Opar to replenish his wealth. Toss in a renegade Belgian army officer, a money-mad kidnapping Arab fiend, some apes, and Tarzan's faithful Waziri - and a severe blow to Tarzan's head causing amnesia. You have the elements for a "Jewels, jewels - who's got the jewels?" kind of plot full of reverses and surprises. Pretty pebbles or precious jewels? Burroughs will keep you guessing!

Tarzan is a forever hero
This a great book, but the first three were a little better. My main question is where was Tarzan's son, Jack? I don't know if I missed hearing his status or if it was not mentioned at all. He definitely played no role in this book and he is one of my favorite characters. The Tarzan series captured my imagination when I read the books as a pre-teen. Now, sixty years later I still find the books fascinating. I become immersed in the jungle lore and the adventures of Tarzan, Jane and Jack. It is a particular treat to have the books read to me by David Stifel. He has narrated the first four books and I find him to be very talented. He does not narrate books five and six, but I love the story so much that I will continue with the series with narrator Patric Lawlor in Tarzan the Untamed. I listened to all the samples and he seemed to be good also.
