Talon in Space Space Space

Talon made me think of one those horror movies that jumped the shark and had a in space episode. This absolutely felt like Conan the Barbarian in space. His crew didn’t really remind me of Guardians of the Galaxy outside of them being a ragtag crew of mismatched aliens who happen to be trying to save the universe. I think it is easy to try to make that association when really they are as unique in this story as the Guardians are in theirs. What started out as a swords and sandals type story quickly evolved to a pulpy space style fantasy. The marrying of the two made for a fun and unique experience.

The overall plot felt fairly typical of a save the world type science fiction story. This one had a few twists that helped to make it stand out from the others, but I would say it didn’t stray too far from the middle of the road as far as plot. You definitely get the B movie feel which appeals to someone like me who used to stay up late as a kid watching sci fi movies on TV. The dialogue and interactions between the various characters solidifies that and you can’t help but be brought back to that time.

What really stood out in the story were the characters. Talon, dressed like He-man, complete with baldric and axe, was a great focal point of the story. Like the modern day one last job type stories, Talon, has one last battle to gain his freedom and it is an epic battle. I liked the supporting characters, although by far my favorite was Zobel, a wolf-like alien who is snarky, arrogant, and a total bad-ass. Selena’s story was another favorite of mine and I hope that as the series progresses we may get to hear more about her.

Travis Baldree is a master at character voices and he could make a medical text book full of life and fun to listen to. Baldree adds that layer to this story that makes it go from a decent sci fi story to an exceptionally fun one. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to Baldree, you owe it to yourself to check out his narration. As always, he nailed this story and I look forward to hearing him narrate the next book in the series.

Pulp Sci-Fi At It's Finest!

I'm a huge fan of pulpy sci-fi. Ate it up as a kid. Movies like Star Wars were my gateway drug, but then I discovered flicks like Battle Beyond The Stars, Starcrash, Hands Of Steel, Yor: The Hunter From The Future, and Spacehunter...just to name a few. A. A. Warren brings us Talon the Slayer; a cross between these imaginative sci-fi flicks and the crazy "Barbarian" flicks I also loved (Conan, Beastmaster, Sword and the Sorcerer).

What REALLY sells this is Travis Baldree's "tough as nails" gritty narration. He really brings the character of Talon to life as well as all the supporting characters. I'm excited to see where this series goes!

Great in its many genres.

Man! This book has it all. Si-Fi, Fantasy, Military Si-Fi, Gladiators, Flavian Amphitheatre, a good storyline, plenty of bloody action. If you like most or all of the above, this one is for you. I recommend this Audiobook. Now for the obligatory: "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review." Pulp Space Opera at its best

First, to get it out of the way.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
If you like space opera in the tradition of Edmond Hamilton, Leigh Brackett, and Lin Carter you will enjoy this book. A. A. Warren has written a rich tale that equals any of the great pulp fiction.
For one who grew up reading magazines like Analog, Galaxy, and others this story was a wonderful find.
Travis Baldree's narration only enhances the experience. I look forward to more from A. A. Warren and Travis Baldree.

Gotta love Travis Baldree & space gladiator!

I knew I was in for a treat when I got this message from this audiobook narrator:

"Do you ever think, "Hey, I long for a book that's like watching Flash Gordon & Conan at the exact same time - except, scratch that, I want to LISTEN to them!" If so, you are in such unbelievable luck. This is straight-up sc-fi pulp that knows exactly what it wants to be. Space gladiators, a sultry alien sorceress, ancient temples, galactic magic - and everyone really values breathability in their clothing, apparently.
I would have watched this approximately 8,476 times on the Superstation TBS."

And sure enough, it did not disappoint, the narrator did top notch job with narrating this kick-ass book about Space Gladiator called Talon the Slayer, anybody who like space adventures and gladiators fighting all kinds of robots and galactic riff-raff should definitely get this book, it's super energetic journey with Talon from a lowly slave to savior of the galaxy, I wanted to say that Talon for me is like Spartacus, but he does even win in the end, hope its not much of a spoiler :)

Such an epic book!

This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

When I was told it was Conan the barbarian in space, I wasn’t lied to, this was so epic!

So much action, so much adventure, so much YES!

But wait... ZOBOOOOOOOO!

You need to listen to this story, I am beyond excited for another one in this arc!

Fun!

This is a truly fun filled, action packed adventure... I knew that I was in for a good time from the very start!
It was advertised as a "Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon" pulp fiction, but I don't think that's quite right... it's close, but more like Conan meets Star Wars, and when I figured that out, I kept hearing John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra in my head! LOL
I can always count on it being a sure thing when I get a book narrated by Travis Baldree! He's really, really good at his craft!
Grab a plate of snacks, and sit back to enjoy the story! You decide if the London Symphony Orchestra plays out as a backdrop! LOL

Better than I was expecting!!!

*I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, this in no way affected my opinion*

(no spoilers)
When I read the description for this book I was excited but a bit hesitant. It looked like it would be a fun read but I was worried it would be some generic story with pointless action. I was thankfully wrong. The story (while somewhat similar to other sci fi stories) was interesting and I enjoyed the different elements of it.

I liked the characters in this book more than I was expecting and how they interact with each other became one of my favorite parts of the book.

And probably one of my favorite things about the book, the narration. I loved travis's voice, the older and kind of raspy voice he can do for some of the characters was one of the most enjoyable voices I've heard in a while. It fit perfectly with many of the characters and it made the book better because of it.

Overall I would recommend getting this book. It has a pretty good story and some great narration, good characters and you wont find yourself feeling bored while listening to this. I just started downloading the second book in the series and am very excited to see how this series continues!!

Conan the barbarian meets Star Wars

So imagine a universe which is sort of a mash up of Star Wars, guardians of the galaxy, Conan’s the barbarian and John Carpenter (the mars one). You have a galaxy in peril, the only hope is a group of misfits and a man who doesn’t know who he is. Toss in some Russell crow gladiator style battles with aliens, space travel and more and you get one hell of a wild romp through the universe the author and narrator transport you to. Can’t wait for the next installment. As I wrote this it brings to mind the irreverent movie “ice pirates” but with more of a serious and bloody take to it. Enjoy it as much as I did! Don't be fooled by the cover, it is a decent book.

This is a fast paced action scifi book.
It is one of those books that jumps straight into action.
Don't expect deep characters, it is all mayhem and fun.
I would recommend it for something not to indepth but fast paced and plenty of action.
