Publisher's summary

In the jungles of Aztlan a deadly war of the shadows is being fought. And the Imperial Guard are losing. The alien t’au, though few in number, greatly outclass the soldiers of the Imperium and are taking a serious toll on their forces.

A call for aid is answered by the fearsome Mortifactors Chapter, who come to the world full of grim purpose. Adoni, an unblooded neophyte yet to earn his place, is amongst the war party. As the Mortifactors descend into the jungle vastness, they hunt for a killer, one that will not die easily but that whom Adoni must slay if he is to become part of the Chapter and a Taker of Heads.

The Predator vibes

the voicing of this short story is subtle and very enjoyable. the story is very reminiscent of the very 1st Predator movie..

Short, Sweet, Full of Flavor

I've always loved the idea of the chapter depicted in this book. I mean, what a great idea for a chapter of marines. And this book delivers exactly what i wanted, a short and sweet look into this chapter and how they operate. I really cant go too in depth without spoiling parts of the book,

The voice acting is phenomenal. I love this style of more radio play than audio-book for these shorter novels. Well done all around.

Lore Dump

The production values; voices and sound design are great, but the story and characters aren't that great.

I would recommend to listen if you want to know more about the mortifactors.

Great work

Wonderful performance, excellent speaker. The tones and accents gave the characters appreciable life and made them feel more raw and real. It was short, but as long as it needed to be.

For fans of grittier 40k fare

While I understand what the author, narrator, and director were going for here, as a Vietnam vet. This chapter, to be fair, is atypical of the Space Marines and really demands this type of story telling. The one HUGE failing, oddly, was the background engineering which causes pieces of dialog to be lost. Also, it provides bits of background with no context which is one of those devices that either works or it doesn't. Here it doesn't. On the plus (and interesting) side, much like Henry Zou's novel "Flesh and Iron", this novel plums blatantly the brutality of War in the 41st millennium. I cannot say I "liked" this novel because it brought back some very strong negative emotions from my time in country, but barring the distracting soundtrack, I appreciate the craftsmanship of both the narrator and writer.

Meh

Not bad, but not great either. Voice acting is good, but story just isn’t that exciting.

Laudable

I think this book is quite excellent. It gives some insight into a less explored chapter, and builds a fantastic character who I would love to see given an expanded series. St. Martin does a good job pacing the book, and the narrators all read their roles skillfully.

Enjoyable

Prefer the audio dramas from BL. The featured chapter rarely gets love despite being successors of GW's posterboys. The battle gives the Tau a horrific quality compared to the Vietcong. Does not skimp on how absolutely brutal the jungle war is.

Excellent short story

Mortifactors vs T'au on a Jungle world. This was an awesome listen. Just like the old Imperial Guard books.
