Publisher's Summary

Lives depend on two women when a train derails high in the remote Alps, but an unforgiving mountain, avalanches, crevasses, and other perils stand between them and safety. Associated Press reporter Hudson Mead is an extreme skiing enthusiast who has covered war zones and natural disasters during her long and distinguished career, but nothing could have prepared her for the challenges she'll face when the snow train she's riding is decimated by a massive avalanche.

Librarian Steffi Graham, on her first trip abroad, is anxious to hone her rock-climbing skills in a new and unfamiliar terrain of ice and snow. She gets much more than she bargained for when her talents put her on the team that goes for help. As the two strangers struggle to reach civilization, they must compromise and learn to trust each other, a task that may be nearly as difficult as the journey itself.

This book will not disappoint.

Would you listen to Taken By Storm again? Why?

This book was unbelievably well written, and the characters so real. I felt like I was with them every step of the way. It brought out so many emotions. I was on the edge of my seat time and time again. I was hooked from the first chapter, and couldn't put the book down once I started it. The narration was also excellent. Coleen Marlo didn't just narrate, she performed and beautifully.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Taken By Storm?

I really like the part when Anna was "taking care of" JT after his injury. I kept thinking, yes there is justice, as I cheered her on.

Which character – as performed by Coleen Marlo – was your favorite?

I especially like Stephie as performed by Coleen Marlo. You could see her transformation from a shy and somewhat timid individual, to someone willing to take daring chances for another.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

One particular thing that moved me, was how many of the trapped people stepped up to the plate and exhibited kindness and worked for the common good.

Any additional comments?

I've never read anything by Kim Baldwin before. She's great, and I intend to rectify this problem in the very near future.

Wonderful story and great narration!!

This book literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I laughed, I cried, I felt like my stomach was dropping; I was there with Steffi and Hudson. Ms. Marlo did an incredible job brining the entire book to life and Ms. Baldwin's attention to detail made me feel like I was dangling on the edge of a mountain as well. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story. Well worth it!!!

Live the danger, feel the cold.

Taken By Storm holds a special place in my heart, as one of the first lesbian fiction books I ever read and an early favourite.

This is a book I love to go back to, because Baldwin makes you feel like you're in the middle of the action.
Coleen Marlo's voice and pacing are a great fit for it, accentuating the danger and urgency of the cast's predicaments.
You won't just root for the characters, here. You'll find yourself with them, buried under an avalanche, huddling close to ward off the freezing cold.
A great, immersive adventure with a dash of romance.

Couldn't put the book down. Up until four a.m. reading. Excellent adventure and I loved that we got to see the heroines normal life and progressing romance before and after the thrills.

It made me tear up

This was a good book, that made me not only teary eyed, but emotional with its romance and excitement. And strengthens my passion for books written by Kim Baldwin as a romance writer.

Terrific story of Avalanche danger

Riveting story of alpine beauty, danger, and climbing feats on snow and ice. The groups' survival depends on their ability to work together and pool expertise as well as their food and other resources.

Worth listening to

I really have enjoyed ALL Kim Baldwin's novels. If you like adventure this is yet another great story to listen. Coleen Marlo sounded like she had a cold, but, I got so into the storyline and the characters that I felt I was watching a movie. And Narrator does a great job with different emotional reactions. Overall a must have book!!

addictive listen

I listened to this overnight instead of sleeping, and I'm finding it hard to rate the story. On the romance side, scores average, but in terms of a gripping survival, disaster tale, it's pretty good. The novel starts slow, setting the stage and the introducing the main characters. Kim spends a lot of time introducing and developing a number of characters each with unique personalities and backgrounds, as the story progresses.

The main f/f romance focuses on Hudson (self-sufficient international journalist) and Steffi (Librarian and hobbyist cliff climber). To me, the romance is a small part of the story, with the majority of this in the last couple of chapters. It reads more as a survival adventure. I did enjoy it, because I like stories which involve many characters and seeing them interact in an affirming way. But also the author did a great job of maintaining suspense and interest as the victims try to survive.

Despite the environment and challenges in which it was set, I did feel the romance and conflicts of the romantic leads could have been more dramatically played out. For example the trust thing could have resulted in many arguments, or incidents. I also was disappointed that Steffi was not the one to signal the helicopter at the last minute.

In terms of the narration, I did find this hard to follow. I don't know if it was my settings or the Coleen Marlo. But she spoke very fast, and I could not slow this down with the speed settings. So I don't know if this is an issue with the posted audio rather than the narration. So please check the sample before you buy. That been said she does a great job of handling all the different nationalities involved.

In the end it’s an enjoyable read, but perhaps more as a disaster/survival adventure then a pure romance.

Predictable, average, not the worst I've but not the best.

It's always a gamble when choosing a book, this is one I had for ages but couldn't really get into it, eventually I was left with little choice so embarked with hope....didn't take long to find it very average, very similar to other formulaic books that to my amazement and disappointment get published. I've read some fantastic books and some dire, this falls in between, not being of much substance, and soon becomes predictable.
The story isn't very plausible, though it makes one wonder how the same story would be written in the hands of Waterman, or Zimmer..to name a couple..., could they have made it believable, gripping, tense and less obvious about thr outcome?
We'll never know. So if you want something that won't rock your world and is easy going, this is just such a book.
If like me you keep your favourites for another read, this isn't one of those.
As the outcome is so very predictable, if you've been enjoying it, the end doesn't disappoint...it's as expected which I suppose makes the ending satisfying if you care.
As I said, not the best, but not the worst. Average.

Wow, nail biting and beautifully written

I really enjoyed this book. The first one from this author for me and not the last. The story is fab from the start with a great story line and a brutal disaster that will keep you urging the characters on.

Highly recommended and a great performance by the narrator.
