Publisher's Summary

Rosie Hopkins thinks leaving her busy London life, and her boyfriend Gerard, to sort out her elderly Aunt Lilian's sweetshop in a small country village is going to be dull. Boy, is she wrong.

Rosie's life is...comfortable. And even though she might like to pursue a more rewarding career, and Gerard doesn't seem to have any plans to propose, Rosie's not complaining. Things could be worse. Right?

Lilian Hopkins has spent her life running Lipton's sweetshop, through wartime and family feuds. When her great-niece Rosie arrives to help her with the shop, Lilian struggles with the idea that it might finally be time to settle up, and wrestles with the secret history hidden behind the jars of beautifully colored sweets.

But as Rosie gets Lilian back on her feet, breathes a new life into the candy shop, and gets to know the mysterious and solitary Stephen - whose family seems to own the entire town - she starts to think that settling for what's comfortable might not be so great after all.

Lovely story weaver

I have read several of Ms. Colgan’s books. They are entertaining and have very interesting characters. Definitely a “feel good” read. They are my reward for walking the dog in the woods every morning, a true guilty pleasure.

A Cozy Afternoon Listen

This was a fun book to listen to. It took me a bit to realize it followed two related women back and forth through the years. When I did I fell in love with both of them and followed their stories down thru the years to the bringing them together in the present.

A very sweet story! ;)

In this genre, you often find stories to be formulaic and predictable. This one is neither and is so refreshing that way. Colgan has a talent for rich and intriguing characters, and this book is no exception! It’s a multi-dimensional story with relatable people. A delight!

Story Fun. Narrator Not Good

Although this story is light and fun, the narrator is not good, particularly with the male characters. The voice she chooses to use for the male characters makes them all seem humorless, dour, and boring. This shortcoming almost ruins the whole story.

I Struggled

Jenny Colgan has become a definite favorite of mine! But this book was difficult for me to finish. (Spoiler ALERT) I knew almost as soon as Rosie moved from London that she would dump her lump of a boyfriend and what the outcome of the shop would be. While there we're some great characters in between... there's Far to much grouchy-ness from the residents (they, after all, live in an idealic village) to keep my interest in the minor characters. As a result, I'm sure I missed a lot of intricacies that would have helped me rate this book higher. Sorry Ms. Colgan!

Very little climax to story

Characters and setting are very well developed, but I kept waiting for something big to happen and it was very anti-climactic.
