When a beloved actress is cast in a feminist adaptation of a Fitzgerald classic, she finds herself the victim in a deadly game of revenge in which everyone, on screen and off, is playing a part.

“A breathlessly fun, dark, and twisty tale of feminist revenge.” —Lisa Genova, New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice

Lila Crayne is America’s sweetheart: she’s generous and kind, gorgeous and magnetic. She and her fiancé, visionary filmmaker Kurt Royall, have settled into a stunning new West Village apartment and are set to begin filming their feminist adaptation of Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night.

To prepare for the leading role, Lila begins working with accomplished therapist Jonah Gabriel to dig into the trauma of her past. Soon, Lila’s impeccably manicured life begins to unravel on the therapy couch—and Jonah is just the man to pick up the pieces. But everyone has a secret, and no one is quite who they seem.

A twisty, thought-provoking, “wildly imaginative” (Joyce Carol Oates) novel of construction and deconstruction in conversation with the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sweet Fury is a bold critique of America’s deep-rooted misogyny. With this novel, Bischoff probes the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator and examines the true meaning of justice.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"A feminist film script of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s TENDER IS THE NIGHT, about a psychiatrist and his unstable wife, plays a large part in Bischoff’s latest work, narrated by the author. Hollywood star Lila Crayne will play the wife; her husband, Kurt, is the director. Lila seeks help from therapist Dr. Jonah Gabriel regarding her character development. Bishchoff infuses Dr. Gabriel with calm control even though it’s a conflict of interest for him to take Lila on as a client because he’s carried a torch for her since their college days. During their sessions, Bishchoff believably portrays the distraught Lila as she describes real-life spousal abuse by her husband. Adding to the drama is Bischoff’s portrayal of the animosity Lila’s mother feels toward her son-in-law."

From the beginning of this novel to the last few minutes, I super enjoyed every second of it. The performance was fabulous. The writing is of the highest caliber for this genre. I am really looking forward to more work from this exciting new novelist. Don’t hesitate to buy and binge this novel in a day like I did!

I have one gripe which is a spoiler; so stop here if you’ve not read it.

SPOILER:
I really loved this book. I loved the feminist bent. I was so super disappointed to see the main character turn on the other woman. It made me feel like: “gosh, even in a feminist novel which calls out misogyny in such an interesting way, we still have to blame the woman.” It made me sad. I realize that not liking a character is not reason to ding the book. But it just felt unnecessary to the plot line and in the case of stories about rape—I’m sensitive to women being blamed in any way.

Awesome…but

Beloved actress Lila Crane is set to star in a feminist retelling of Tender Is the Night, directed by her fiancé, the renowned filmmaker Kurt Royall. As production begins in New York City, Lila starts therapy with Jonah Gabriel, a talented therapist, to process her personal trauma and prepare for the emotionally charged role. But as the filming progresses, Lila’s world begins to unravel in dangerous and unexpected ways. Her reliance on Jonah teeters precariously on the edge of professionalism and something much more personal. Secrets abound and when they come to light, they threaten to shatter everything.

WOW. Just wow. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked this up, but Sweet Fury delivered an absolutely enthralling psychological thriller. Packed with twists and turns I never saw coming, the story unfolds through a mix of third-person narration and therapy journal entries that draws readers into a hypnotic web of lies, deceit, and unraveling truths where nothing is as it seems. The writing is both beautiful and haunting, with lyrical prose and richly layered symbolism that evokes the spirit of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s works. Whether or not you’re familiar with Fitzgerald, the novel’s literary nods and immersive atmosphere pull you into the discomfort of "what’s next" while keeping you completely captivated.

🎧About the Audiobook🎧 The audiobook is narrated by the author herself. Bischoff’s performance brings her words to life with an authenticity and emotional depth that only the author could provide but I also would have loved to know what this one was like as a full cast narration, as I think it has the perfect structure for it. (9 hours and 31 minutes)

Riveting story. Great character development. Suspenseful with a surprise ending. The use of language and structure that Fitzgerald would be proud of.

A feminist homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald.
