Erin Brockovich
Acerca de esta escucha
From environmental activist, renowned crusader, champion fighter, maverick — a book that looks at our present situation with water and shows us how we can each take action to make changes in our cities, towns, and villages, before it is too late.
"Brockovich is a vocal, no-nonsense writer - Roberts might even have downplayed her fire in the movie.... The tales she tells show how addressing water issues at the source can make a big difference all the way down the chain." (Heather Hansman, Outside)
"Brockovich urges people to continue to fight for what they believe in.... [Her] belief in individual activism - rather than relying on leaders, corporations, or the government to handle the water crisis - is the guiding theme in her new book...inspirational." (Sam Gillette, People)
In Erin Brockovich’s long-awaited book — her first to reckon with conditions on our planet — she makes clear why we are in the trouble we’re in, and how, in large and practical ways, we each can take actions to bring about change.
She shows us what's at stake, and writes of the fraudulent science that disguises these issues, along with cancer clusters not being reported. She writes of the saga of PG&E that continues to this day, and of the communities and people she has worked with who have helped to make an impact. She writes of the water operator in Poughkeepsie, New York, who responded to his customers' concerns and changed his system to create some of the safest water in the country; of the moms in Hannibal, Missouri, who became the first citizens in the nation to file an ordinance prohibiting the use of ammonia in their public drinking water; and about how we can protect our right to clean water by fighting for better enforcement of the laws, new legislation, and better regulations.
She cannot fight all battles for all people and gives us the tools to take actions ourselves, have our voices heard, and know that steps are being taken to make sure our water is safe to drink and use.

As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects and his legal troubles were mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the president-elect.

There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Conservationist Rachel Carson spent over six years documenting the effects on DDT, a synthetic organic compound used as an insecticide, on numerous communities. Her analysis revealed that such powerful, persistent chemical pesticides have been used without a full understanding of the extent of their potential harm to the whole biota, including the damage they've caused to wildlife, birds, bees, agricultural animals, domestic pets, and even humans. An instant best seller that was read by President Kennedy during the summer of 1962, this classic remains one of the best introductions to the complicated and controversial subject.

Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Even as climate change dominates the headlines, many of us still think about it in the future tense—we imagine that as global warming worsens over the coming decades, millions of people will scatter around the world, fleeing famine and rising seas. What we often don’t realize is that the consequences of climate change are already visible, right here in the United States. In communities across the country, climate disasters are pushing thousands of people away from their homes.

Never having run for office before, Katie Porter charted a new path in 2018 when she was elected to Congress as a Democrat in historically conservative Orange County, California. Underestimated as a single mom and chided for her progressive values, Katie defied expectations. Then, using her signature whiteboard, she began to take CEOs and corrupt government officials to task in Congressional hearings. The videos went viral, introducing Americans to her no-bullshit style, and making her a coveted guest on cable news and late-night television.

Reseñas de la Crítica
"The celebrated environmental activist details her continuing fight to keep chemicals out of groundwater, highlighting the stakes and offering advice to concerned citizens." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Riveting ... Superman's Not Coming will resonate strongly with anyone concerned about this important topic." (Booklist starred review)
"Two decades after the movie that made her a national celebrity, Brockovich urges readers to confront a scary reality ... [She] offers an easy-to-understand guide to common water pollutants, and she shares stories of citizen activists ... The narrative’s real power comes from her clarion calls to regular citizens to get involved in the fight for safe water ... she offers several concrete suggestions for how people can gauge the safety of their own drinking water and stand up to corporations and politicians ... a call to arms about the global water crisis from a sharp, plainspoken activist.” (Kirkus Review)

Informative and Motivating!
Yes, this book is by THAT Erin Brokovich. Since the eponymous movie in the 90s, Brokovich has worked tirelessly as an advocate for citizens, clean water, and necessary environmental regulations. 'Superman's Not Coming' goes over common water issues currently faced by millions of Americans. She includes understandable science about the chemicals, pollution, infrastructure, and policies that contribute to water toxicity. Most importantly, she details resources and clear action steps that citizens can take to improve their drinking water. Brokovich writes in such a passionate and empowering manner, so this was a really motivating listen.

Why do authors read their own books?!
This book has, undoubtedly, important information and seems reasonably well written, but listening to it did not work at all for me. Almost any decent reader might have gotten me through this book. She is ok in interviews, but like most authors, she just can't read her own book and make it interesting.
