Publisher's summary

Tom Brantley, aka SuperDrunk, is a complex superhero (or perhaps anti-hero?) who discovers that he has the unique power of psychokinesis whenever getting drunk or high.

Revered as Burlington City's guardian, he loves to put on a show for his beloved fans when saving lives and fighting crime, almost as much as partying and fornicating. Despite the citizens egging on his reckless behavior, his family and friends worry about his failing health. With each alcohol-induced blackout, Tom revisits his high school years. He recalls meeting his first love, Amy Cougar, and how she couldn't handle his shallow celebrity lifestyle. But after consuming psychedelics—magic mushrooms, or "shrooms"—it seems like his past exists as an odd parallel reality to his present life.

This sexy and thought-provoking dark superhero story takes readers over the edge and into the seedy world of SuperDrunk, where fighting bad guys and scoring with hot chicks might be nothing more than an escape for a washed-up loser trying to extricate himself from the realities of life.

Funny, yet depressing

This was an excellent story, though I will admit it did get a little difficult to finish because over time, the story shifted to be really depressing. I've even cried near the end, experiencing something similar myself, among other situations that I related to and it hit a little close to home.
The narration is spot on, there's even a couple times where music plays and sound effects play. There are multiple voice actors, and this was very well constructed. A strong recommend, just be careful for it can resurface some dark times in your life.

Not sure what I just listened to

I just.. don't know.

It's advertised as an off color superhero story, and starts out as such. It gets pretty messed up, to the point I thought I had found a 4chan podcast or something. Then it devolves into something like the journal of a schizophrenic.

It seems like there was some attempt at exposition towards the end, but honestly, I have no idea what the actual f I just listened to. It was almost like a "Fight Club" where you never actually found out the truth about Tyler Durden, with some occasional "super powers" thrown in. It's a mindf*** story that never grants understanding or closure.

As a result, I have no takeaway. I don't love, respect, pity, or mourn the MC since I don't know what actually happened. I don't have a deeper respect or insight into substance abuse, physical/psychological abuse, neurological disease, or any of the other terrible pillars of the story since, again, I have no idea what the actual f the story conveyed or was meant to convey.

Honestly, this may be an amazing book and I just lack the understanding and/or life experience to fully comprehend it. That being said, I'm typically rather keen on mindf*** stories, and can't really recall any that left me at a complete loss.

As of this writing, I seem to be the first written review, so take my words with a grain of salt and give it a try. Like I said, this may be an amazing book, just not for me.

Not what it seems

When I picked up this book, I was immediately thrown off by the seemingly ridiculous storyline built around what sounded like juvenile wish fulfillment. The story was about a bizarre superhero named Tom Brantley (no secret identity, he just goes by his actual name), who relies on alcohol and drugs to fuel his powers. Tom is worshiped by everyone, gets any woman he wants, and is literally the most popular person around. Despite being turned off by the novel’s basic premise, something kept me hooked and reading.

About a fourth of the way through, the story shifts into an odd, disjointed tone and uneven pacing. At first, I thought it might have been an amateurish writing style. However, as the main character's life descended into darkness and despair, I realized the writing was far from amateurish - instead, it was raw, real, and unapologetic. I discovered a story far from what I originally took it for; instead, it was original, unique, and undeniably dark. As I looked back to the earlier chapters, I realized that much of what I had mistaken for poor writing was part of the foreshadowing and hidden detail that hinted at the truth behind the story.
