Publisher's summary

Discover the darkness that lurks around every corner in the latest instalment of the award-winning Grace series, now a major ITV series.

A ruthless crime. A race against time.

In the dead of night, a farmer hears a suspicious noise. It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: a break-in. When he confronts the intruders, he has no idea that just minutes later he will be left lying in a pool of blood. But the chilling truth lies not in the act itself, but what the perpetrators were willing to kill for.

At the scene of the crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace senses something amiss. This is no mere botched robbery; it’s the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime epidemic. Ruthless gangs, operating with military precision, have discovered a new black market flourishing in the shadows – an unthinkable source of wealth even more profitable than drugs.

Grace’s investigation into this deadly trade pits him against some of the most ruthless people he has ever encountered; people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder.

The clock is ticking, and the stakes have never been higher. Out of his element, and out of time, can Roy Grace put a stop to these criminal masterminds before more innocent lives are lost?

Peter James is back on form!

The last few in the series have been a bit hit and miss but this latest offering really had me wanting to listen all the time. I’m not sure if this crime is based on facts but it really was engrossing.

A few ‘coincidences’ too many tying everything together, maybe, but it is fictional and a very addictive story, excellently read, as usual, by Daniel.

I hope the next in the series doesn’t have us waiting a whole year 😅

Another fantastic book!

Peter James is one of my favorite authors and once again he didn't disappoint. Daniel Weyman is the perfect narrator for this book with his range of voicing characters and clarity of speaking making it a really enjoyable listen. 12 out of 10, looking forward to the next one!

Thank you for giving neglected dogs a voice

The story centres around illegally imported, stolen and puppy farmed dogs. It’s a harrowing listen for animal lovers but I’m glad I persevered. As usual, an excellent story by the amazing Peter James.

It was wonderful to hear rescue dogs being promoted. Breeders made a lot of money during lockdown by exploiting the reproductive systems of animals, while rescue groups, such as Paws And Whiskers Sussex, relied on foster carers to spend their own money on looking after dogs in need of homes.

This book‘s gripping and clever story engaged the reader, gives us more insight into the lives and personalities of our favourite characters from the series, allows the long-suffering Norman Potting to be the hero, while gently showing us the reasons why adopting a rescue is by far the best thing to do.

Excellent!

One of his best. An incredibly complex and layered story that worked from every angle. I love the character development and intelligence of the writing. At times the story was so intense, I almost couldn’t listen—an exciting and thought provoking story.

Great Story

An original story line about the hideous illegal puppy farms and brilliantly narrated by Daniel Waver.

Just ok

I’m a huge fan of the detective Grace series. This I felt is definitely my least favorite. The story is contrived and tries to hard. And there’s nothing at all moving the overall arc plot. It starts in the beginning dropping a hint about Bruno‘s last phone call. But then follows up with nothing. And acts like, his previous relationship with his son wasn’t complicated. They bring up his arch nemesis in the beginning going to trial. But it’s never addressed again. This didn’t move the overall Grace plot along. Unless you’re some kind of huge dog fan. Don’t get me wrong. I love a dog. But this whole thing was just ridiculous. I say meh don’t waste the credit, unless you’re like me and you have to read all the books. But definitely my least favorite of the whole series.
