From the author of Planetside, a Best Book of 2018 (Library Journal)

A military legend is caught in the web between alien intrigue and human subterfuge…

Following his mission on Cappa, Colonel Carl Butler returns to a mixed reception. To some he is a do-or-die war hero. To the other half of the galaxy he’s a pariah. Forced into retirement, he has resettled on Talca Four where he’s now Deputy VP of Corporate Security, protecting a high-tech military company on the corporate battlefield—at least, that’s what the job description says. Really, he’s just there to impress clients and investors. It’s all relatively low risk—until he’s entrusted with new orders. A breach of a competitor’s computer network has Butler’s superiors feeling every bit as vulnerable. They need Butler to find who did it, how, and why no one’s taken credit for the ingenious attack.

As accustomed as Butler is to the reality of wargames—virtual and otherwise—this one screams something louder than a simple hack. Because no sooner does he start digging when his first contact is murdered, the death somehow kept secret from the media. As a prime suspect, he can’t shake the sensation he’s being watched…or finally succumbing to the stress of his past. Paranoid delusion or dangerous reality, Butler might be onto something much deeper than anyone imagined. But that’s where Butler thrives.

If he hasn’t signed his own death warrant.

Mike and RC Bray have once again captured my attention on an interplanetary journey through intrigue, deception and combat. The characters are great and the story flows in such a way that you'll be annoyed to hit the pause button. I can hardly wait for book 3.

Excellent

Not sure why I like this main character so much, but he's kind of relaxing to listen to. There's the inner talk that's a bit humorous and self-deprecating at times, but the story builds a believable world set and there's not too much tension or horror or dystopia - which I've been avoiding lately in books. I bought this book because I enjoyed the first book, and would buy a third book in this series too.

Relaxing futuristic military space mystery story

After the first hour, I was hooked hard. The series is absolutely tremendous and having a veteran as an author helps tremendously with the reality of military life and post life. 100% recommend this book if you like militaristic sci-fi.

Just wow. Tremendous book and series.

A really wonderful second book. And as always great narration by RC Bray. Do yourself a favor and read book one and then this one. I'm on to book 3. Great series so far.

A Great Story set in space

I love sci-fi. So when I buy a book listed in that category, which also has title and a cover with an illustration that leads one to believe the book will mainly be sci-fi, I get annoyed. Therefore, I’m reviewing Spaceside as a sci-fi novel.

The protagonist of the story is a veteran who, following orders, completely destroys the surface of another planet. Very few of the race who originated on that planet survived. In the eyes of other sentient beings (which are exclusively human or part-human) he is either a hero or a genocidal mass murderer.

The book continues with murders, attempted murders and mysterious people who are, of many aren’t, following him. This sends him out to solve the mysteries that increase daily. Eventually he discovers who is manipulating him and why. IMO, until this point the book is a detective book that happens to involve an alien race

And then, after several listening hours, the book finally changes into what I consider sci-fi. Now the reader gets spaceships, a bit of pseudoscience, fun weapons and armor! Yay! The main character, who is actually a fun, street-wise type of guy, manages to outsmart the bad guys and possibly save a bunch of good guys.

The book ends with a couple of cliff-hangers which, it is to be hoped, will he resolved with the sequel

Less sci-fi, more detective story
