Publisher's summary

The last thing she expects is an instant mating with a handsome alien warrior...just before they are abducted by the deadly Kantos.

Commander Kaira Chand of the Australian Air Force knows the meaning of loss. She lost both her beloved husband and her father over recent years, and she vows never to let a man close again. As head of security for a secret weapons facility in the Australian desert, she’s fighting to protect the scientists working to defend Earth from invasion. That includes working with their allies, the Eon Warriors. What she never expected in her wildest dreams was to find herself instantly mated to a handsome, silver fox alien warrior.

Medical Commander Thane Kann-Eon lives to heal. He’s dedicated to keeping his crew aboard the warship The Rengard whole and healthy. Unlike his fellow warriors, he knows he’ll never mate. There hasn’t been a mating in his family for generations. Then, a petite Terran commander changes everything. He’s instantly drawn to Kaira, and as soon as their hands touch, he’s stunned by the deluge of emotion that crashes over him. An unheard-of instant mating.

In the midst of their shocking connection, Kaira and Thane find themselves abducted by a Kantos strike team. Taken aboard a battlecruiser, they soon realize the insectoid aliens nabbed the wrong couple, and they are marked for execution. Now, they face a wild race for survival that will take them to a distant, deadly world. They’ll both struggle with their raw, intense mating bond against the backdrop of a Kantos proving ground where everything is out to kill them.

Wow!

Commander Kaira Chand of the Australian Air Force is totally devoted to her work, since she lost both her husband and her father in the past few years. She’s wary of trusting her heart to anyone, so work is her focus. Medical Commander Thane Kann-Eon is a healer from a family that seems to be cursed with an inability to find and keep mates, so he has accepted that he will never mate.

When these two meet during a celebration for others, they are instantly drawn together. As a result, they discover that they have been instantly mated, in spite of not really knowing each other at all. Kaira rejects this situation, while Thane accepts that he will never force it, and figures that’s just another part of the curse. Around this time, they are mistakenly abducted and taken to a Kantos ship, where they have to work together to survive. This allows them to see and admire the strength and the courage to be found in each other. They also discover that they work really well as a team. Along the way, they discover friends and allies in unlikely places.

Buckle up, because the story takes off quickly, and doesn’t relent. The pacing is fast, and the adventures and dangers don’t take many breaks. The tension goes ‘off-the-charts’ at times, and this listener had to pause this audiobook a couple of times—just to take a recovery breath or two. Both of these protagonists are honorable, likable, and capable. In spite of having just met each other, they are both willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that their mate survives and escapes, regardless of their own fate. This story includes some fresh, new and exciting elements that haven’t been explored yet in prior books of this Eon series, which elevates it. So readers can expect lots of Kantos death and destruction, fights, gross creatures, near-fatal attacks on one or both protagonists, and just-in-the-nick-of-time help, but readers will also find some delightfully new twists thrown in. It all adds up to a fantastic read. This is a series, so it’s best to read or listen to the series in order, but if you do pick this audiobook up and listen to it out of order, be prepared to want to go back for the whole series!

Perfect mix of romance and action

The biggest disappointment in this book is realizing that apparently the next book may be the end to the series! (Although Anna Hackett hinted in her author’s note that the story will continue to evolve! So yah!) From the beginning of this story, detailing Thane and Kaira’s story, there was action. Yes, we know a HEA is imminent but Anna Hackett makes the characters work for it. What an exciting ride and I loved the evolution of the romance as well as the story of the Kantos, but like aliens, trying to dominate the world. The book reminds us that every side of the story is truly not only back or white but also shades of gray. What a rich world the author has created! I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Vivienne Leheny is the narrator for many of her books, including the gladiator series, and I love her nuanced performances. This reading is no different. Listening to her reading, I was brought into the story and it was a fun way to reexperience the story (I read the ebook first through KU).

Some refreshing tweaks to the formula

These are still on the Pringles end of romance: crunchy, salty snacks that aren’t very filling. But, there’s a few tweaks to provide a bit more variety and depth. For one, this couple is older. They are also both believers in love, a welcome change from the “I’m married to my job” mentality of most of the previous couples. Kaira is a widow, afraid to love again; Thane is a doctor first and warrior second. Finally, the challenge of instantly forming a mating bond was a fun twist.

In addition to the romance storyline, there are some good tweaks to the adventure side. There is still a too coincidental rescue by an alien species that goes nowhere once the rescue is done (hello, wouldn’t the Eons/Terrans do something to help the beings that helped them?). But, this time there is another group of convenient rescuers that joins our MCs for a more meaningful storyline with a more realistic conclusion. Also, there’s finally some background and nuance for the enemy Kantos instead of being a one note, Starship Trooper style bug menace.

Now if only the author would abandon the way each gal calls her man Warrior… “get over here Warrior” “Don’t even think about it Warrior” … eight books in and you’d think at least one of our gals would use soldier, buddy, tough guy, or some other nickname. Alright, nitpick aside, this was a fun little bit of popcorn p😜rn. My top three are now books 1, 3 and 8.

Action-packed

This book has so much action; this would be great on the big screen. Loved the way the relationship blossomed; nothing came easy. This one is my favorite so far; looking forward to listening to the next story; it will be interesting to see the women who wins the hear of the King. Narrator continues to do a great job bringing out characters.

Soul of Eon

Anna Hackett continues to shock me with the twists and turns each story takes!! Kaira and Thane’s storyline is filled with action, suspense, sexy times and the new knowledge that not all Kantos are bad!! Who would have thunk it? 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ Kaira was a little stubborn at times with her blatant denial and refusal to accept Thane as her mate. However, Thane’s steady patience and refusal to push her allowed her to overcome her true fears and openly accept him! Vivienne Leheny was phenomenal as always with her narration! Looking forward to more!!

Instant mating!

Thane and Kaira are instantly mated seconds before they are kidnapped by the Kantos. Now they have to work together to escape from the Kantos and stop them from unleashing a deadly new weapon against the Eon. In this book we also find out more about the Kantos why they are so aggressive and how there society works.

Anna Hackett always amazes me with the details she puts into her world building. This narrator is great and really brings the story to life.

This book can be listen to as a standalone but you should totally start at the beginning of the series because they are awesome.

The next book is with King Gayel which I can’t wait for! I am so excited to learn more about the king of the Eon.
