Publisher's Summary

The gods are dying. Thane has served his goddess for thousands of lifetimes, but even he knows that time is running out. There's only one way to save her, to save all of Dweller kind, and it's a suicide mission.

The host is a boy named Jakob. His ancient soul is one of the rare sources of power still recycling in the world of flesh. Thane has taken so many souls to his goddess, but this one could save them all.

It's only when Thane learns the truth of the gods does he deny them their power. Souls aren't recycled. They're destroyed, and his goddess isn't a deity...she's a monster.

Permanently melded with his human host, Thane meets his soulmate, a woman who captures his heart like his goddess never did. He'll do anything to protect her, and the gods know it.

Great New Series!

I offered to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, I can be critical of narrators. Especially when books have a single narrator required to speak with different voices for multiple characters. Most cannot do it without having some errors where they use the wrong 'voice' for the wrong character. I am a true believer in the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great book and have turned away several books with good ratings because of just that. The narrator in this book did a great job, so I was able to listen to the book without issue.

Next is the story. I am not one to give a lot of specific story details since I feel you should read the story for that, and in this case, you won't be disappointed. This is book 1 in a paranormal series, which has great characters and an interesting storyline with lots of intrigue and suspense and will keep you listening until the story ends, or at least book 1 of the story. Trust me, if you are into paranormal suspense books, you definitely won't be disappointed!

Book got better as it progressed

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I am curious where this story is going. The publisher’s summary is good so I won’t expand. I liked the relationship between Thane and Jakob. It was entertaining. There was a degree of conclusion to this book, but a definite lead into the next. To me it does not have the true feel of a cliffhanger, just a good intro into what to expect at the start of the next book.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Rueben Corbett ) and I would listen to another. He performs this book quite well and adds the right amount of expression. He uses accents to help differentiate the characters and his female voices are well done.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Lots of Potential

This story had lots of potential, with magic, mystery, secrets, gods, and betrayal, but there wasn't enough background and world-building for me to understand everything that was going on. Then, in the end, all the action and adventure seems to have been for for naught and the book ends on a flat note. The semi cliff-hanger ending wasn't dramatic or compelling. Kind of a let-down.

The narration was very good, with different voices for the different characters, good tone, and good pacing.

Wow! Captivating!

This narration was so very good. The story was captivating. I was engrossed from the beginning and could hardly pause the narration to get chores and errands done. I really want to listen to book 2 now but I don’t see an audio out yet. Once it is I need it! I really feel for Thane and Jacob and can’t wait to hear what happens next.

Interesting and engaging!

Thane one of the main characters melds his soul with Jacob a young human man in order to save the gods. Thane and Jacob become nearly one over the years as their souls mesh. It turns out Jacob's soul is ancient and somehow the savior that Thane is seeking to save the god's. I enjoyed how Thane and Jacob meshed together. The author did a fantastic job with their characters and dropping enough clues to understand how they are one body and two souls.

I was a bit confused with the ather and how that worked. I love the idea of it but wish the author had given more information on that earlier in the story. Overall, it's an epic journey embarked on by Jacob and Thane. They meet some interesting creatures with plenty of action and adventure. I think the narrator's pacing and voice do the story justice.

Complex, intriguing, and engaging.

The lore/magic of this world was incredibly foreign and complex to me, but the characters and intricate plot kept me engaged in the story as the lore became clearer and clearer. Its a book that i could listen to again and probably enjoy even more than i did the first time through. Though it could perhaps be found confusing as you enter it's fascinating world, the book demands your attention and keeps you involved as it progresses through its expanding universe. It has all the things I love and yet...

I got to listen to this book at the courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review. This story has a whole mess of things that I love! It's got magic, mythology, shifters, action, romance, drama, incredible world building, pretty much everything. I'm trying really hard to figure out why it didn't work for me.

Since this is an audiobook, I would like to say that the performance was definitely not the issue. The narration in this is excellent and engaging, although I did prefer it at a higher speed of playback. Reuben Corbet does have a slower natural cadence, but I wouldn't say that's a bad thing, I just preferred it sped up a notch. He's very expressive and does a wonderful job of voice each character, including the two voices *sharing the same body* in way that is distinct and easy to tell apart from the others.

This is a well thought out world, and a good story. However, I don't love it. It may be that this one just isn't the right book for me, that happens every once in a while, and I'm inclined to think that's the case since I can't put my finger on a specific thing that put me out of sorts with it.

The closest I can get is that the world that has been built is incredibly complex, and I definitely found it hard to insert myself into that story. This is the first book in a series, but I feel like I'm missing so much development of this universe, and being forced to jump into it head first is disorienting. It made it harder for me to connect to the characters and the action because I don't honestly fully understand the logistics of the setting.

The complexities of what makes a human and a dweller different, and how they interact with their gods was hard for me to follow because there was very little prelude or explanation of it. It's as though it's been assumed that the reader (listener) already has a clear basic understanding of the world's systems.

Again, this may just be a "me" thing, and perhaps if I had read the text I would feel differently and be able to track better with it, but it's what stands out most to me as hindering my enjoyment of it. I think the characters are great, and the action is compelling. I really like Thane and Jacob both, and through the whole thing I want them both to be ok. The way the figure out how to work together is pretty cool. I think this one just maybe wasn't for me.

Enjoyable for All Ages

Really great book. It has shapeshifters and adventure. Really like the take on afterlife. The narrator was fantastic. I would recommend for young teens and up. Really excited to see where the next book leads.

Interesting start to this series

Due to the setup of this book, it was a little slow to get going, but once the main character had got past the prologue part of the book, things picked up quite nicely with strong world-building and an entertaining cast to fill it out. Obviously with this being the first book in the series, it perhaps could have benefited from being a little more self-contained to engage the listener more strongly, but it is enjoyable enough that the payoff in subsequent books should offset any slight concerns with this one.

The narrator did a good job overall, particularly with the main character where it was important to establish which of the two was in control at that time and he enhanced the story overall with his performance.

Overall, an interesting and quite quick introduction to this series, one which I will be interested in seeing how it progresses.

Good performance and well written, but not my cup of tea

I think this book wasn’t my favorite partly because I’m an impatient person. It took forever for the world to be build and the plot to get started because we had to meet the main character, wait for him to find a soul to attach to, meet the gods and goddesses...it just took a while before things finally got moving. I’m a little weirded out by Jacob and Thane sharing a body, but otherwise the [good] characters were charming.
Sometimes the first book of a series feels like walking through a swamp - sticky and slow going but still adventurous - as the author gets the world and plot built and moving but the following books are where it gets really good. I’m feeling like this is one of those because this was well written and developed.

Soul Bound

I was given a free copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.

I loved this book, the concept of your soul being trapped in another body, whilst trying to break free from it but being fought all the way. a battle of will to keep your soul.
The characters are great and have depth to them .
The narration is superb bringing each character into thier own and giving the unique traits.
I would most definitely recommend this 1st book and I will for sure be following the rest in this serise.
