Publisher's summary

The landmark new novel from award-winning author Claire Keegan

It is 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man, faces into his busiest season. Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, Bill makes a discovery that forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church.

Already an international best seller, Small Things Like These is a deeply affecting story of hope, quiet heroism, and empathy from one of our most critically lauded and iconic writers.

Packs an emotional punch

Short and powerful. A good man makes a brave effort to help someone in desperate circumstances.

Gorgeous

I love everything of Claire Keegan's I've read. This is short but slyly brilliant. You only slowly realize where she is going and how much she is building up under the apparently quiet surface of the story. I am a writer myself and plan to teach this to my college students next semester.

Perfect narration

A beautiful story that goes so much deeper than the simple narrative. Listen to this one on a cold winter’s night and feel the warmth from Keegan’s perfect writing.

Beautifully Written

Written with a delicate precision, this short story is about a man as his precarious position in a small community starts to unravel. It touches on universal themes with emotional clarity, yet it’s essentially Irish. I will read everything this author has to offer.
