British Ship off the US coast 1778

This my third Kent book and I understand this is the 5th book in the series. So far Audible is not carrying all of them. This book provided a different look of the revolution as it is from the British view point. The British are running a blockade off the US coast. Our hero Richard Bolitho is sent off to rescue some British Soldiers and is also successful is destroying a privateer that was plaguing the area. Toward the end of the book he is promoted to Captain and is trying to rescue General Cornwallis but fails to do so. Some nice sea battles in the story as well as intrigue. If you like sea stories of this era you will enjoy this story.

Excellent sea-faring yarn

The narration by Jayston adds a very realistic tone to this novel. His ability to mimic different characters is amazing. (except, possibly, the ladies) I certainly will be looking for more Kent novels narrated by this gentleman. An excellent read.

Captain Bolitho Grows on me

I found this title be exciting and full of adventure... what a great story well written and well narrated. I often found myself to be reading still into the early morning hours as sleep finally over came my desire to see Bolitho around the next headland cleared for action. You will enjoy this one!

If you love Patrick O’Brian

I know you read this often but it’s true. It’s an excellent series. And Jayston is the perfect narrator for this author. A separate remark: i’ve always enjoyed the old recording of The words “Audible hopes you have enjoyed this program.” They didn’t use it in this recording. I hope they’re not giving it up. It’s like an old friend.

At odds with myself

During the book you end up rooting for the English even though I'm a American.

Revolutionary war English point of view

Would you listen to Sloop of War again? Why?

Spoiler alert, ... the Americans won the Revolutionary War. This book was written from the perspective of the losing side, but I did not realize how much of a Torre I was until I found myself rooting for the English Captain Bolothio.

What other book might you compare Sloop of War to and why?

Any of the Master's and Commander's books by O'Brien. It is the same amazing historical fiction settings with different personalities.

Take off!

This is where I think that the Bolitho series really gets into top gear. Bolitho is in command and able to use his tactical thinking to the full. Kent displays excellent historical and technical sailing knowledge as he brings the American Revolution to life from a slightly unusual angle. Like many of our historical conflicts the navy is sorely stretched and its role perhaps not fully appreciated, but Kent's Bolitho is of course at his best when the odds are against him!

Good writing with excellent reading

Having read the whole series of the Bolitho saga I was eager to hear them read. This book does let one down. As the characters are developed by the author, they are enhanced by the the excellent reading by Michael Jayston. Though not authentic in all respects, it doe give a good idea of life aboard a wooden warship and superb seamanship. The story rattles along at a good pace and though the book is part of a 29 book series, it does read as a standalone story. Well recommended.

Another excellent adventure in the Bolitho series. The different characters seem to get more interesting as you progress. I hope they are planning to reproduce more in the series narrated by Michael Jayston.
