Story
In October 1943, a U.S. destroyer sailed out of Philadelphia and supposedly vanished, the result of a Navy experiment with electromagnetic radiation. The story was considered a hoax - but now Juan Cabrillo and his Oregon colleagues aren't so sure. There is talk of a new weapon soon to be auctioned, something very dangerous to America's interests, and the rumors link it to the great inventor Nikola Tesla, who was working with the Navy when he died in 1943. Was he responsible for the experiment? Are his notes in the hands of enemies?

Story
When the CIA realizes the identities of three American spies in Brazil have been compromised, they turn to Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon to rescue the agents. What seems a routine operation turns out to be a trap designed by Juan Cabrillo's greatest enemy, a man driven by hate to seek the ultimate revenge. At the heart of the plot is a state-of-the-art ship that is identical to the Oregon: same weaponry, same technology, same ability to evade capture. The only thing it doesn't have is Cabrillo and his talented crew.

In fact, Pitt and the NUMA crew have inadvertently stepped between a Mongolian tycoon and his plans to corner the global oil market, beginning with covert negotiations in China.

Didn't realize this was abriged... shame on me
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There seemed to be sooooo much missing. The narrator is OK, but being used to Scott Brick for this series it was jarring to hear the familiar characters with odd voices.
Did Skeleton Coast inspire you to do anything?
yes... to check for the unabridged version, which to my surprise was already in my library. Imagine my chagrin to realize i'd paid twice for this. BUT I can say the story was unrecognizable from the longer version.

Cussler and Du Brul score again
Would you consider the audio edition of Skeleton Coast to be better than the print version?
While in my opinion a real book is always best, however, listening to a book is a great way to fill the time when driving or walking. The audio book is a great way to keep yourself entertained while doing mundane tasks.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Cussler and Du Brul work well together. They develop a story quickly introducing the characters and developing the plot. I find myself getting involved, and taking longer walks and driving further just to listen to the next section, a late night page turner addiction.
What about Jason Culp’s performance did you like?
Tone or voice and timbre all excellent. His voice adds to the overall story and allows you to "get into" the story quickly. It allows you to identify with the characters and develop sympathy for the good guys while detesting the bad guys.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A story decades in the making, bringing history alive.
Any additional comments?
Cussler always begins his stories with a prolog that lays the foundation for future discover. A prolog that sets the stage and gives an incite into earlier mankinds adventures and follies. If Cussler's or Du Brul's name is on it you can bet it will be a good listen (read).
