Publisher's summary

Tracy Brown's Single Black Female is a taut, edgy, deftly spun novel about four friends grappling with the dramatic twists and turns of life, love and what it means to “make it” in America.

Ivy Donovan is a successful stylist, entrepreneur, and single mom who has been loyal to her sons’ father, Michael, who’s serving a lengthy prison sentence. But life has gotten lonely over the years, and Ivy wants more for herself. Michael, however, isn’t about to lose his family.

Coco Norris is well-off, single, childless, and struggling with her allegiance to emotionally unavailable men. When she finds a man who seems like he can give her everything she has ever wanted, Coco soon discovers that she has taken on more than she can possibly handle.

Deja Maddox is a real estate agent who is married to Bobby, a police sergeant with the NYPD. They have assimilated, looking down on anything that doesn’t fit their buttoned-up, polished life. But Deja isn’t as satisfied as she would like everyone to believe. When Deja’s past returns with a vengeance, she’s forced to face herself as her “perfect” life begins to crumble.

Nikki Diamond is a savvy, self-made businesswoman and social media darling who lives large and with no regrets. She’s also Deja’s little sister and thinks her sister can have so much more than her ho-hum marriage. And Nikki is all too happy to lend a “helping” hand to make that happen.

Things come to a head when Ivy’s youngest son, Kingston, is caught up in a polarizing encounter with the NYPD. Everyone must figure out where they stand, including Bobby, who suddenly has to decide if his “blue life” matters more to him than his Black life and the Black lives of those he loves.

Single Black Female highlights the nuances of Black love, the often tested bonds of Black families, what it means to face the world as a Black man and the joy and pain of being a Black woman.

Didn't Like This One

I like drama but this was over the top, Is this supposed to have been black drama, is it supposed to show how black people act, not sure. I really despise all the cursing, seemed like every other word was a curse word as if they couldn't express themselves without foul language, also is this supposed to represent how black parents speak around their children and husbands calling wives B's and so forth, I was really disappointed in it all, tell you the truth. I got the storyline but I was stuck on the characters and their vial emotions and especially their mouths.

Black women, We are Resilient, and not cherished

The story of each character has so much relatable content. We are the least protected women that walks this earth. We are a combination of a Queen and Warrior.

Amazing!

Wow! This book had me all in my feelings. I felt all these women. And being a black woman, having to be strong all the time putting everybody else before me, I felt this book. I have 2 daughter's and 1 son. This book struck a chord with me in so many ways and had me in tears at some points. Now that's a good book to make me cry. Awesome Job Tracy. You did it again!

True story

This story hit on a lot of truths. Black women have always been the backbone of our family without blinking an eye and yet we never get the praise we deserve. Deja on the other hand is one weak pathetic woman with no backbone whatsoever. I don't blame Bobby for hating her, she's a user and a self-absorbed bitch ugh 😑 😤. great narrator

What a story!

First, the title of this book doesn’t fit the storyline for me. BUT, the women featured in this book were very enjoyable as characters and the plot kept me interested. There was definitely a specific “heavy” part of the book(that I sort of wish wasn’t part of the storyline) but overall it was a great way to get into the minds, hearts and lives of these women. Also the narration…the NARRATION was so solid. The narrator did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.

Excellent Book

I enjoyed every moment of this book. The book illustrated Harrek truth about the American society. It also demonstrated the great divide. I highly recommend this book.

Great read

I enjoyed this book! I found myself really engaged in each character’s situation. I found myself saying “yeah gurl, that’s right” and “no he didn’t!” Much more than other books I’ve read. LOL! But like I said, it was a very good read.

Great story and really well read

Narrator is brilliant in this book. Whizzed through as I was enjoying it so much. I would highly recommend! Narrator has a brilliant way of bringing characters to life without ruining the flow of the story and bringing them to life, making the story so enjoyable!

Complex exposition of how racism blights

Parts of the storyline just so painful to endure. Tracy Brown has a piercing undertanding of the way in which racism pervades the ordinary lives of black women and how that racism in turn robs them of healthy relationsips with the loves of their life. Through it all the women are strong and focussed in their own way, a good portrayal of the human race survival instinct and how that instinct brings joy and motivation to succeed. Well done Tracy!

Sorry

There was just something not quite right with this story for me.
Parts of it I really enjoyed, the gritty bits. But I found other parts a bit twee.

Good, but I wanted more

This was a really good book. But I feel it ended way too soon. I believe the ending was rushed, it didn't leave any indication for a part 2. But overall it was a good story
