Story
My name's Cèsar Hawke, and the people in my life are filled with good intentions. We all know where that ends up. A fissure to Hell has ripped from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, and now half the City of Dis is in my hometown. Helltown's hotter than ever. Demon dynasties are on the rise. Nightmares are out to get me. Staying alive means forgiving people I've kicked out of my life, it means getting vicious with magic, and yeah, it means I'm dealing with dead bodies. Lots of them.

My name's Cesar Hawke. I'm a witch working for a division of the government you've never heard about. The world's not what everyone thinks it is - unless you think that our world's a pawn in a game of chess between Heaven and Hell, and riddled with as much magic and wonder as it is with evil. In that case, the world is exactly what you think. My place of employment - the Office of Preternatural Affairs - takes a modern approach to an ages-old problem.

A killer is mutilating bodies in Los Angeles. Agent Cesar Hawke is on the case, but the murderer is ahead of him - way ahead of him. Wiping the memories of the dead so that the team's necrocognitive can't talk to them? Done. Preventing magical reconstruction of the crime scenes? Oh yeah. And the murders keep getting more brutal while Cesar struggles to catch up.

There are scratches on Cèsar Hawke's arms, a discharged Glock on his coffee table, and a dead woman in his bathtub. Yeah, maybe he brought the waitress home for some fun-he was too drunk to remember it-but he knows for a fact that he didn't kill her. He's an agent with the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He doesn't hurt people. He saves them. The cops disagree. Now Cèsar is running.

Story
You’d never know that Shatter Cage is a were-squirrel by looking at him. Between fake fire charms and his impenetrable confidence, everyone believes he’s the phoenix he claims to be. The lie is a necessary part of his branding. He’s determined to become a Hero, blessed by the Oracles and venerated by legions of followers. For now, he’s just one more thief slinging magical artifacts on the black market, hoping for infamy to strike like lightning. But he’s never going to become canonized if Gutterman, demon and loan shark, gets his pound of flesh from Cage first.

Publisher's Summary
Former private investigator Cèsar Hawke has one rule: He doesn't deal with dead bodies. That's why he enlisted with the Magical Violations Department in the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He's happy tracking down witches that commit petty crimes, but he leaves the homicides to other agents.
Except that he's been assigned to a new team-a team that handles special investigations-and the job has suddenly changed. Now Cèsar has to deal with dead bodies. He also has to deal with necromancers, murderous cults, and demons that can stop a man's heart with fear.
This isn't the job he signed up for, but it's the job he needs to do.
If he survives the first week.

2nd book and I am not disappointed!
I usually expect to be, but it looks like I found a new series to follow. Witty and exciting and the magic seems reasonable and practical not over the top fantastical with crazy funny sounding incantations. IF it were real, this is how I'd imagine it.

"Never touch my phone."
A really enjoyable urban fantasy mystery. Cesar Hawke is a former preternatural bureaucrat who has been thrown into the deep end. He wants to go after witches, and other assorted baddies, who are committing misdemeanors. The next thing he knows he's on a special team and he's being chased by demons, giant spiders, werewolves, not to mention The Union, a scary agency that is definitely not peopled with paper pushers. Cesar and the team are sent to Reno to investigate an IDE, which is an infernal demon event. Their is friction between the women on the team, but the stand out is Fritz, the boss who is cool, funny and has a dry sense of humor. Cesar's inner monologue and outer dialog can be pretty darn funny. I found myself laughing out loud, which is always a plus for me. The books are short in length and page turners. Great narration.

Something I feel good about recommending.
Any additional comments?
It's rare that I find a book that's easy and entertaining and something I want to continue.
Along the same lines as Witch Hunt, but I think Mr. Hunt, the protagonist is picking up a little more with each experience. His character is growing, a tiny bit at a time.
I do think it would be a touch more interesting if we hear a little more input from the female characters.
And I do agree with another reviewer: put this in a visually stimulating, special effect tv show/movie and it would rock.
But so did Dresden Files and that didn't last long. Too bad we masses with vastly different tastes have to rely on the few who control what gets made into video and probably do not have enough time to relax with a good book.
