The haunting account of the Delphi Murders, a double-murder case that has held an unrelenting grip on the American heartland for over six years.

On February 13, 2017, two teenage friends went for a walk in the woods just outside the small city of Delphi, Indiana. They should have been safe—but Liberty German and Abigail Williams never made it home. The next day, searchers found their bodies in a clearing. The two girls had been brutally murdered. Incredibly, in the final moments of her life, Liberty somehow managed to capture a video of the man who would soon murder her and her friend. This blurry recording showed a man lumbering toward the girls and then gruffly commanding them to go “down the hill.” A fascinated public obsessed over those clues. Speculation about the killer’s identity ran rampant on social media. Meanwhile, a sprawling law enforcement investigation led to some of the darkest corners of the heartland. Still, the case remained unsolved for years.

Everything changed in October 2022 when authorities announced the arrest of Delphi resident Richard Allen. But as the case began to make its way through the justice system, many began to question whether the small community had what it took to prosecute the case. They also wondered whether or not the police had even arrested the right man. Investigators, officials, prosecutors, and the defense attorneys found themselves stuck in an unprecedented firestorm of online controversy and subterfuge, with so-called internet sleuths hyping up conspiracy theories and trading leaks.

Now, Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee, the investigative team behind a series of bombshell reports on the case have put forth the only definitive account of the entire investigation. Shadow of the Bridge: The Delphi Murders and the Dark Side of the American Heartland goes deeper and offers more detail than what was shared on the popular Murder Sheet podcast, answering many of the questions that have haunted so many since the deaths of Libby and Abby. Most importantly, in working closely with the German and Williams families, Cain and Greenlee tell the stories of who these two warm, bright, and promising girls were to all who cared for them. With rigorous research and captivating prose, Shadow of the Bridge is a powerful narrative of a complicated, twisting story of tragedy and a community's determination to see justice.

I followed this case for years, as my imagination, like so many others’, was caught by Libby’s brave act of filming her killer, and Abby managing to hide the phone before her death. The authors are also the hosts of The Murder Sheet podcast, an attorney and a journalist who exhibited their own bravery with their relentless unmasking of the oftentimes bewildering actions and behavior of various people associated with the case. Through threats and harassment, they’ve produced arguably the definitive book on the case, leaving no detail unrevealed. Kevin Greenlee narrates the book, and does so with his characteristic warmth and care. Five stars, for sure.

Shadow of the Bridge is a thorough guide to everything-every piece- of the tragic Delphi murders in Delphi, Indiana in 2017. Kevin and Áine do a wonderful job of recounting the story in such detail that you feel like you’re in the woods with the investigators looking for the girls. Thorough research and due diligence went in to this book and it is evident in the way the book is written to reflect actual true events of the murders, the investigation, and the trial of Richard Allen.

For years to come, this will be the book at the top of the reference list when discussing the Delphi Murders. Kudos to Kevin Greenlee and Áine Cain.

Thorough and engaging

Well-written and research, and frankly lived, story of the lives of Abby and Libby and their tragic murder. Áine and Kevin are so thoughtful in their choices throughout this book, in terms of words, how they bring us into the woods and also the conversations to bring this evil murderer to justice. Kevin is amazing as the voice of the book!

Having followed this case for years, this is a very detailed, comprehensive telling of the deaths, investigation and justice for Abby & Libby. The authors of this book have devoted hundreds of hours to covering this story. They have covered it with compassion and integrity. I was so happy when I learned that Kevin Greenlee would be narrating the books for Audible. I follow his podcast so it was like an old friend reading it to me and I could focus in on the words. I recommend this to anyone wanting to know about the Delphi murders.

This was an extremely devastating case. The authors were boots on the ground from day one. Their podcast gave an in depth look at what was going on. This book is the most detailed and accurate recounting of the case. The authors did an amazing job telling Abby and Libbys final story for justice.

The absolute Bible for this case.

As an Indiana native, I have followed this case from day one. When Richard Allen was arrested and charged with the girls murders, I knew I had to know and follow EVERYTHING. I started on YouTube. I found some good things to watch there, but then had a random person in a Facebook group tell me to check out “The Murder Sheet” podcast. I thought what the hell. I popped it on while refurbishing a vanity for my daughter. I was HOOKED. At this time, it was December 2024, so not a whole lot going on compared to what was to come. From the moment I finished the first episode about Delphi, I was hooked. I became an avid fan. There were occasions where I would check out some other podcasts, jump on YouTube and check out what others were saying, and nothing else stuck. The fact that they stuck to the facts, and barely showed their side, I loved. I have listened to every single episode dedicated to the Delphi murders, and I am SO thankful for their hard work. I honestly couldn’t have asked for more. What they went through just to be at court and bring the podcasted information to us, shows their dedication to not only their fans, not only their jobs, but to Abbey and Libby. You can feel in their voices and words how much they have grown to love those little girls, and never even met them. It’s heartwarming. With that said, as soon as the book came out, I had to have it. I read it the first day. Total shock. I never dreamed that they could go above and beyond what they already have. Reading it I felt like I was reading court records. There was more detail than I could imagine, I felt as if I was there. I cannot thank them enough. Their hard work is SO appreciated. When I seen they were doing meet & greets to sign their books, I had to go. Unfortunately I got pneumonia (in the summer/warm weather) of all times, and I missed the ones near me. Totally bummed I was not able to attend, that truly would have been the icing on top, to personally thank them for their DAMN EXCELLENT hard work. Crossing my fingers they will make another round!! If you see this guys, Morgan county would LOVE to host!!! Anyway, the book was so good, that I decided to buy the Audiobook also. Kevin Greenlee’s voice is that of an angel, it’s almost TOO good, I had to stop listening to it while sitting still or I’d catch myself so at peace I was dozing off! I want to also say to those that are either undecided on Richard Allen’s guilt, or those that are hell bent he’s innocent, I know you’re likely not going to change your mind no matter the amount of proof he did this, but give the book a listen, if for nothing else, because of the inside look at the trial, at the end, take a quick google trip, and look up a visual of the timeline, with when the witnesses saw bridge guts and saw Richard Allen, when they saw the girls, all of it, because THAT you cannot get past. Still, I know most that believe the man is innocent refuse to change their minds simply because of their pride. And that’s okay, to each their own. Regardless of your opinion of guilt, you will absolutely get so much from this book. Again, so much gratitude to the authors, for every bit of what your brought to us. And to their family and friends that supported and helped them get to this point. Your dedication and hard work has not gone unnoticed, and is beyond appreciated. Thank you-

I’ve listened to The Murder Sheet podcast, and Aine Kane and Kevin Greenlee wrote a great account of this tragic case.

Excellent account of the Delphi case and trial

This is what journalism and empathy look like. Cain and Greenlee cover an extremely sad case, the resulting social media circus, and the actions of some very bad actors with integrity, objectivity, and fact-based reporting. I appreciate hearing the facts and evidence presented in a very straight-forward manner, not fantasy conspiracy theories from tantruming cranks.

Excellent research, factual telling
