Publisher's summary

Perfect for fans of Secondborn, The Hunger Games, and Maze Runner, this dark dystopian tale of survival, intrigue, and slow-burn romance will grip you until the very last minute.

My name is Maia Graystone: prisoner, rebel, and reluctant savior of a dying world.

In exactly 552 hours, an asteroid will end life as we know it. Not that my life is anything to brag about. Trapped inside a hellish prison, my days consist of surviving the other inmates and the bounty on my head.

Then a mysterious benefactor offers the impossible: a chance to compete in the Shadow Trials and win a coveted spot on the space station above our dying world.

But the opportunity comes at a steep price. Partner with a dashing psychopath, enter the court that once condemned me to death, survive the ruthless trials created by my own mother, and kill the emperor - the very man who's hunting me.

In this cunning game of life and death, nothing is as it seems and everyone expects me to fail. But they forgot one tiny detail.

Never underestimate the girl with nothing left to lose.

Dare to enter the gritty world of Shadow Fall, where tyrants rule, misfits reign, and antiheroes are tasked with saving the world. If you like enemies-to-lovers romance, high-octane action, and epic themes of good versus evil, you'll binge this roller coaster of emotions late into the night!

Too Predictable and Depressing

I got so close to the end of this audiobook before I finally threw in the towel and stopped listening. She killed off one too many of her likable characters for me. Someone else left a review about how every "nice" character gets killed off, and it's true, except for the two main characters. Not only that, but most die by sacrificing themselves for the good of others. When I realized Grey was about to kill off yet another character I liked, I cheated and read ahead in the ebooks, and yep, each character I liked was predictably killed off, and at least three sacrificed their own lives like they were Spock, which got redundant. It was very frustrating. I read to escape, and this was not a fun escape. To add insult to injury, one of the most dislikable characters survives.

It is also so derivative of other books, especially The Hunger Games trilogy. There is even a trick that is played in this trilogy that is similar to the trick played on Katniss near the end of Mockingjay. Ever since the Hunger Games, it's like YA authors think they have to have a lot of character death and angst in order for their books to be popular and taken seriously, which simply makes them real downers. I hated how The Hunger Games series ended on such a depressing note of hopelessness - how Kat's whole life was messed up afterwards. I don't read to get depressed, and this trilogy is an exercise in futility. I regret the money and time I spent getting attached to these characters, and I am glad I had not bought the second or third audiobooks yet.

I also felt the world building was too rushed, or maybe it's just harder to follow in an audiobook than when you can read the text yourself. I felt like some details were left out or confusing.

Great first book

This was a very good first book starting a dystopian series. I enjoyed it and was able to get into it pretty much from the moment I started the book. There was definitely a lot of angst in this story but it worked with these characters and this plot. It was very good and I kept on wanting to know more about it. I never wanted it to stop and am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. The world building is so good and the characters felt very real to me. The narrator did a very good job bringing these characters to life and making them feel even more real.

Nothing

I just couldn’t get into this book. Can I get a credit back. Maybe it’s the person reading.

Not for me

I tried to like this story, but the narrator was annoying and the story did not hold my interest.

The best dystopian series ever!

I loved this book- which really surprised me to be honest, because I usually am not kept interested by most books of the Dystopian genre. Maia Greystone, and Riser together assume new identities to try and take down the Emperor. The narrator does a great job individualizing each character and I was enthralled to the last word. I immediately downloaded the entire series and finished it in days. I recommend this book to anyone- even if you think Dystopian isn’t your thing!!

Good start to the series!

The book started off a little on the slow side but really started to grab my attention about half way through. I was not a huge fan of the narrator. I felt she rushed it or maybe it was just her voice. I can’t wait to see what’s next in the series
