Publisher's summary

A gripping novella from the New York Times best-selling author of the Inspector Banks Mysteries and a "master of the art" (Boston Globe)

Retired Cambridge professor Donald Aitcheson loves scouring antiquarian bookshops for secondhand treasures - as much as he loathes the scribbled marginalia from their previous owners. But when he comes upon an inscription in a volume of Robert Browning's poetry, he's less irritated than disturbed. This wasn't a gift to an unwitting woman. It was a threat - insidious, suggestively sick, and terribly intriguing.

Now Aitcheson's imagination is running wild. Was it a sordid teacher-pupil affair that ended in betrayal? A scorned lover's first salvo in a campaign of terror? The taunt of an obsessive psychopath? Then again, it could be nothing more than a tasteless joke between friends.

As his curiosity gets the better of him, Aitcheson can't resist playing detective. But when his investigation leads to a remote girls' boarding school in the Lincolnshire flatlands, and into the confidence of its headmistress, he soon discovers the consequences of reading between the lines.

Entertaining

7 years is a great detective story about a retired Cambridge professor who bought a book from an old bookstore. When the professor opened the old book, he found writing on the margins, which aroused his interest. The retired professor becomes the detective, and 7 years is on that journey to find the meaning behind the scribble. It is well written and well read.

well developed novela

it took a few minutes for the story to grab me because visiting used bookstores is not a hobby of mine Nor is reading classics and poetry what i normally look for.

however, this book is not about used books so much as it is about a murder mystery. it really was not difficult figuring out who did it. however it was interesting to read how the "detective" discovered what happened. the detective in this story is not a very smart detective.

A Little Step into Danger

This is a nice quick story. The mystery elements work well and it much more suspenseful than a story featuring a retired professor ought to be.

Just killed some time

I don't regret listening for just under 2 hrs. It was an ok story with a decent ending. Certainly not "gripping". It was just a fairly good way to kill time.

Very good!

I really enjoyed this story, the characters, the narrator, and satisfying outcome. I'll look for more books by this author, and also for this narrator.

Pretty cool short fiction

My initial suspicions were not confirmed, which always makes the story more enjoyable. And Patmore’s voice was perfect for this piece.

Murder “sunny-side-up”

This delightful short story is fun to listen to, especially these days where we are inundated with dystopian, dark and sensational literature.
The author does not convey any positive attitude towards murder, nor does he ‘glamorize’ it. He does send us on a twisty journey trying to figure out what’s going on, and caps it with a satisfying ending.
Good fun!
