Publisher's summary

Book 6 in the award-winning and best selling Sentinels of Creation saga sets the stage for next year's series finale.

Only a few short months have passed since Meghan and Shannon successfully retrieved Kellan from a brutal life in Claudius’ Rome. The Soulborn struggles with how Order, Chaos, and Creation have all left their mark on Kellan during his time as a gladiator.

Neither Kellan nor Shannon is given much time to ponder these changes. Upon their return from Rome, Sentinel and Soulborn are caught up in the first act of the culminating struggle between Creation and Destruction. Merlin once again calls on the Sentinel of Order to keep open the narrow path that protects our world from Perditor.

To do this, Kellan and Margaret Karnstein are called to fulfill an angelic prophecy. They must breathe life to stone for the heart of Chaos to become ripe for redemption. While Kellan is far from sure how to complete the prophecy, he knows all roads lead through Aibreann O'Dochartaigh, Lucifer's only mortal love.

For her part, Shannon leads both Kellan and her most trusted friends into grave peril as she fulfills a promise made despite opposition by vast powers and principalities. The Soulborn remains undaunted as she confronts both demons of the first fall and a Fae prince of Twilight. As Fate would have it, her actions serve a far greater purpose than even Shannon knows, for if our world is to survive, the Soulborn must find A Scion of Amber Light.

Now THIS one is my favorite!

My previous favorite in this series was Book 3: A Wizard’s Soul, but this one has now supplanted it. There is so much going on here. I love how the Author manages to give each character at least one moment in the sun without kluging up the plot.

The overall theme for the whole Sentinels of Creation series is on full display. I paused about halfway through and said to myself, “Holy cow, this series is now six years old. Did Ross plan all this out that long ago?” If you've read his author notes, which I also recommend, you know that Robert Ross calls himself a hybrid discovery-outline author. I think that means he has a general idea of where he wants to go, but discovers new things along the way. I love that. Oh, and about the author note. This one was so incredibly open and poignant. Don't miss it.

But back to the overall story. You definitely get the sense of a very long game having been played between the ultimate protagonist and antagonist, who are not the main characters. As most people know by this point, there are two main characters, Kellan and Shannon. Where they fit in to the struggle between Creation and Destruction makes up half the story. The other have is where they fit in to each other. Such a tremendous love story, without the series being, you know, a romantic love story. Anyway, I thought it was fantastic and have very mixed feelings about the next book being the last in this wonderful series.

I don't want it to end, but end it must because all great stories have equally great endings, and this is a GREAT story!

First six books review

I hate stories that involve time travel. The Sentinels of Creation series is the one of the few exceptions to that rule, and is one of my top three favorite audiobook series. To keep this review spoiler free, I'll just say that I'm often caught smiling, laughing, and sometimes cheering for the characters out loud with my headphones on. The stories and characters pull me in.

Nick Podehl's narration is a perfect companion to the writing. To paraphrase something I wrote once about Nick's performance in this series, "Nick Podehl is THE best narrator I've ever heard. Robert Ross gave him a ton of characters to voice, and I have never had a problem tracking who is talking. Even when he is doing two different British voices, I can tell them apart. When I hear Lucifer, I hear Bowie. When I hear Jarvis, I hear Paul Bettany. All of the characters are easy for me to identify without being told who it is. I'm glad that Robert Ross was able to connect with Nick. I don't think many narrators exist that are able to perform as well as he has."

Part of me selfishly hopes this never makes it to a movie or television adaptation, because I'm afraid the stories would be ruined.

new high water mark for the series

No spoilers - but significant events in this book ratchet up the story line. The whole "redemption" of the devil storyline is also great, and I like it that we got to see more of Poulo (sp? - I am on the audiobooks...)

the narrator is of course terrific.

I also really enjoy the author's note portion of the books - though it perhaps should be read by the actual author...?...or is that just me?

Can't recommend this series strongly enough - great characters, storylines, low humor, snark, action, god and monsters, etc. - something for everyone.

Spectacularly Action Packed Excellence

There is so much packed into this story that one cannot help but become completely and truly immersed. Don’t get me wrong, it is well-laid out and the reveals were methodically timed – there is just lots of action, reveals, and setting the stage for, possibly (and I am hoping at least Kellan and Shannon continue somewhere), the final book in this series. Having returned from Rome as a gladiator, Kellan and the Soulborn Shannon find themselves caught up saving the world, training Margaret, and fulfilling an angelic prophecy.

Margaret and Kellan can only fulfill the angelic prophecy by helping Lucifer regain his mortal and true love, Aibreann O’Dochartaigh – and there is a major surprise here! Mix in the fact that Shannon wants to become a mother … Kellan has his work cut out for him because in order for there to be a baby Kellan … well, let’s just say it will be intense for everyone!!!!
Ross continues to build each character’s depth and connection. We are given a shout-out to a character from his new series, Trinity’s Children. Kellan has always been a favorite character of mine and it is reassuring and comforting to know he will not change from the smart mouth, highly intelligent, sometimes overly confident man I have come to expect. His insight is fresh and engaging. We are given deeper glimpses into Lucifer, Merlin, The Creator, and more.

The storyline for the book and series is meticulously planned with steady progress and exhilarating suspense. This is by far the most exciting and engaging of this series. I have enjoyed each and every book in this series and while I am sad to learn it may end, I trust the author enough to know that it will be EPIC.

Nick Podehl once again delivers a magnificent performance. The words roll off his tongue with the perfect amount of inflection, rhythm, and confidence. Each character has a unique voice and speaking pattern that is consistent throughout the series. I could sit and listen to Podehl for hours!

I highly recommend this book and this series to anyone who enjoys sci-fi action books, it is one I would strongly suggest you NOT miss!

Better Than usual

I've Loved these books since the first one I read several years ago but this is the first in the line where I didn't find Shannon to be absolutely grating on the nerves.
For several books she seemed to exist purely to slow the story down and I found myself constantly wishing she would just shut up and let the other characters speak and get on the business. But to the point, she seems to have finally matured a little. the story, the weaker than normal, flowed much smoother in this outting.

My favorite of the series!

I didn’t think anything would be able to surpass book 5 as my favorite in this series. Book 6 does that by miles!!! Each of the characters continue to develop in ways that pull you in further. I feel like I could go visit them and feel welcomed as part of the family. The love that Kal & Shannon share is so amazing. It makes me think so much of my relationship with my husband, my soulmate. ♥️♥️♥️

I found this series after listening to Robert Ross’ Paradigm series (well, at least far as what has been released) lol. In one of the Author’s notes at the end, he talks about how James came from this series and how there were other recognizable names. I love when authors do that.

I can’t wait to start book 7!

Best so far

I don’t understand how he can write such relatable characters within a fantastical story. This book so far has been the best of the series, and I will be immediately starting the next one.

Fantastic 6

I cannot state how much I am enjoying this series! I love all the characters and how they interact with each other it is so real to life. I find Megan a little aggressive all the time but that's who she is and I've even found myself making excuses for why she's like that - that's how real life this story makes you feel. like your are living the narrative with them!
