Publisher's summary

For the past three years, Grace Blakely has been desperate to find out the truth about her mother's murder. She thought it would bring her peace. She thought it would lead her to answers. She thought she could put the past to rest.

But the truth has only made her a target.

And the past?

The only way to put the past to rest is for Grace to kill it once and for all.

On Embassy Row, power can make you a victor or a victim; love can turn you into a fool or a fugitive; and family can lead you forward or bury you deep. Trust is a luxury. Death is a very real threat. And a girl like Grace must be very careful about which secrets she brings to light.

I’m hooked!

I started this series when my sister had the hard copy, but I love being able to hear the different voices and can listen to books while I run. This series is so fun and full of surprises! Definitely worth the listen!

Ok story....

I like the story line. I don't care for the crazy repeat of craziness in her head... I really do not like this narrator at all! All the men sound like they are trying to poo. It's very very annoying when she try's to do a males voice... I'm just about to get rid of this book for that reason.

The Good and the Bad

First off, the book has great story idea, good twists and turns, and decent supporting characters. It is also set in an interesting place. I would love to read more books that are set in an environment like this one. However, I have never found a character to be more annoying than this main character. All she does is whine page after page about one thing to the next! Not to mention she spends half the book inner monologing about how sad it is that she is the way she is and the other half trying to convince people she is the opposite. It gets tired fast.

The most irritating flaw is her massive overreaction to ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. In her overreactions, she manages to make every tragedy about herself, even when she really has nothing to do with it. She is quick to jump to conclusions and makes a scene as much as she possibly can even in times when she is supposed to be hiding or sleuthing around. Par for the course, she later heavily self criticizes about how she made a scene but never seems to learn from her mistakes as she will just overreact again later. The efforts of other characters calming her down are futile, pathetic and sometimes unrealistic. Additionally, it is hard to understand what her main goal is and how the story manages to move forward. For as many tantrums that this character does, it still does not feel like she has any control. Things just seem to happen around her. There also seems to be no repercussions for the stupidity the main character causes. Everyone is quick to forgive her actions or often write them off as nothing. If the main character was a real person, she would probably not fit in very well with how heavily obnoxious she is.

The side characters are nice though no one really seems to be very distinctive. Many of the boys look the same and all the girls can seem the same. The only individualistic character is the mean girl even though she is so stereotypical. Some side characters really go above and beyond in the realm of being a friend or family member. The supposed adults of this book are completely incompetent, even whimsical. They overlook the children repeatedly and also never learn from their mistakes.

I do not find this book to be very well written, though Ally Carter has written other series that are very good. Her main character is a dud and her other characters are unrealistic because of their actions and naivete in an attempt for them to make up for the protagonist. The story as a whole is average. It is simple yet unpredictable though due to an unrelatable main character. Overall, I did not enjoy listening to this book and I would not recommend it.
