Secrets Never Die is a creepy thriller from New York Times bestselling author Vincent Ralph about four teens who all have secrets that are coming back to haunt...and terrorize.

We call it the Dark Place. I don’t know who built it or when but, for us, it’s special.

Every year Sam Hall and his friends hold funerals for their secrets in an abandoned hut in the woods that they call the Dark Place. But this year, their secrets are coming back from the dead...to terrorize them.

Sam is a former child star whose career went up in flames – literally. And no one, not even his best friend knows why. His friends each hold a secret pertaining to the night. A secret they would all like buried.

Now someone from the past is blackmailing them with their dangerous secrets. Sam isn’t sure who he can trust, who’s watching him – or how far he’s willing to go to bury the past once and for all.

When you’re alone in the dark, some things won’t stay hidden.

There wasn’t very many moments that made me feel excited. It was just ok. I decent listen to kill time at work.

The lack of impact

The premise is a solid setup of the sins of the past coming back to haunt your main characters which seems to be a huge theme in a lot of these recent YA thrillers. However this one is a bit less where it is the main teens’ sins coming back to get them and the sins of the parents wracked upon the next generation; also not new if you’ve seen “Friday the 13th” or a similar story. I found the characters to mostly be on the dull side except for our focal character, Sam, and his family; the friend group are mostly the stereotypes of a best friend, the girlfriend, the bully friend who tortures the other classmates & his sister who still lives at home. The mystery does take a long time to really get to its climax which hurts the pacing quite a bit; the story is 78 chapters when it could been nearly half to seventy-five percent shorter. The payoff at the end is kind of bittersweet, but also leaves a creepy lingering question in the final sentences which caught me slightly off-guard.

Decent but not spectacular
