Publisher's Summary

The seven houses of the matriarchal Seaborn have plied the seas of the Fair Isles for centuries, trading among the islands and fending off the attacks by the fearsome Bone Pirate.

But suddenly, out of the night sky, a common enemy appears - the Windborn, who come without warning to raid, burn, and kill.

Hoping to turn the tide, Shae - the Bone Pirate’s first mate - enacts a daring plan to fight her way aboard a Windborn vessel. The raid yields a prize - the airship’s captain who is, to Shae’s shock, a man.

Together with a reluctant heroine named Bela, they learn the truth of their shared history: the Windborn and Seaborn come from the same people, split apart by blood magick when a race of immortal mechanical men betrayed their human makers.

Now, these unlikely allies must make a desperate journey to confront the secrets of the past - and stop the dark magick at its source.

Michael Livingston is also the author of Black Crow, White Snow; The Shards of Heaven; and At the End of Babel.

A fresh take on fantasy and pirates.

Truly a unique universe that does an excellent job world building in a way that is relatively easy to understand and follow. Definitely looking forward to the next book coming out.

Quite nice fantasy

But not really a romance. There are hints about budding relationships and one FF relationship admitted, but they are sidelines to this great story of greed, old tragedy, and current conflict. Half the world seems a very patriarchal matriarchy that treats men as nearly animalistic, the other half (which is not nearly as revealed here) seems like a more modern patriarchal society that allows a good bit of equality to its women. It sets the stage for a good trilogy, but there is no second book planned it seems, and there are several storylines hanging.
The performance is perfect!

Wonderful Pirate Magic Action

I love pirates. So when I learned of a book about female pirates I was excited. The book starts off with an attack from air ships on pirate fleet. I was immediately hooked because I wanted to know in what world pirates and their ships would collide with aircraft. The book continues to unravel secrets, mysteries about fury wood, islands, the Pirates and the mysterious aircraft it was a fantastic ride.

My favorite character was the humble but savior-prone Bela. Ahh, I liked Shea, too. But her struggle with her destiny wasn't as pronounced.

Liked it very much. Great narrator, took a little time to understand the lingo, but very good.

Pirate women that actually kick ass, yes please. Not many of these stories around. Hoping for another book to continue the story.

Pretty decent

My only disappointment was that there appears to be no sequel as of yet, though this book is apparently part of a trilogy.
This was an interesting read with a unique and well thought out magic system. The characters were likeable and 3 dimensional. Some of it was a little cliche but that is forgivable.
I was given a free short book by Michael Livingston which I enjoyed, so I purchased this book. I like, at least from the two books of his that I've read, that he has strong female characters, even entire female run societies.
I recommend this book and look forward to the next in the trilogy.

Imaginative!

It’s a very interesting world being built - as a series, I have a feeling it will be grand. As a stand alone book, I felt a little was left to be desired in the characters and story development/plot. Because of this, I’m not eager to attend to the next book in the series, but I’m also not disinterested entirely.

Excellent

I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the narration by Evans. Few narrators are as good as her. Ordering the next in series!
