Great story and good narration

Book has a great storyline. The narrator brought the characters to life and made the book enjoyable. Really enjoyed the book as a ebook and this audiobook made it even better. The characters really came out more to me through the audio book and I connected more.

Tightly woven & well-written, enjoyable listen

Scared Shiftless (The Legend of Nyx #1), my fifth read from author Theophilus Monroe, and my first in a new series. Well written & enjoyable read, very different from his Voodoo Legacy Series. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Kasey Logan's narration sets a different tone for this series & adds to the enjoyment of the book. I look forward to the next book in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Not Your Typical Vampire Hunter!

Great start to the series and a fun audio to listen to!
I really enjoyed Scared Shiftless and getting to see more of Nyx! Fun and interesting story that definitely kept my attention!

Scared Shiftless (The Legend of Nyx Book 1)

Nyx, a water elemental, has prowled the water for centuries, hunting, becoming what her prey found desirable. Then drew them underwater to their deaths and her sustenance. After she tried to catch a Vampire, she was bitten. Now because the Vampire got away and she could no longer shift form, she is trapped in the body of a man and has to live as a trans-woman to be true to herself.
She has learnt to eat human food, hold down a job and make friends with the humans she used to eat. In her spare time, she is a Vampire Hunter, on the hunt for Alice, the Vamp that has stolen her abilities. Once she finds her and eats her heart, the hunt would be complete, and she could go back to her life as an elemental in the river.
She teams up with Vamp Wolfgang, and Brucy, her sprite conscience to find Alice the Vampire who should have been Nyx’s meal.
The book has a good plot and some humorous parts. And the narrator did the characters justice.
However, this is an LGBTQ book. So If you are LGBTQ or LGBTQ friendly, this will be the book for you; otherwise, pick something else.

want spunky bounty hunting, listen to Nyx!

A unique spin on the paranormal and elemental magic with bounty hunting spunk! The author links a storyline that delves in deeper to connection of belonging/self-love that many can relate to. The narrator does a pretty good job with the various voices, though there were mild shifts in quality from chapter to chapter. Interested in listening to the next book in Nyx series!

I enjoyed this story. Nyx was an interesting character & now I am hooked. Nyx is stuck in the last form she shifted to. She was going to feed on a vampire but he bit her instead, stealing her shifting abilities. Now she is a man who sings in a club by day and hunts vampires at night looking for the one who stole her abilities. A great read.

Engaging Vampire Hunter Fantasy

I enjoyed this unusual vampire hunter story. Theophilus Monroe wrote a creative tale in which a paranormal being started to hunt vampires in order to find the vampire that stole her ability. The characters were complicated and unique. The tale had twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Kasey Logan's narration was good and kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

I’m new to this literary universe and I’m reading things out of order. I previously listened to The Legacy of a Vampire Witch where Nicky is a character in book 2. I wanted to bring her up in that review because she was one of my flavorite characters in the entire series and even the literary universe so far. I gave up because I didn’t know how to spell her name.

Nicky is a trans water elemental and it’s amazing how much the author gets right about what it’s like being transgender. (I would know.) It was nice to read (listen) to a book that actually got things right and portrayed the character and being transgender in general hot it actually is. That being said, there was a decent chunk of the book that felt more like a lesson/lecture that got old fast for me, having lived all of this first hand.

The thing I dislike most about this book and really most books in this literary universe so far (I’m 4 books in) is how each one seems to feature an overly long introduction. I’m somebody who re-reads and listens to the books I enjoy over and over. I am 100% going to pick up physical copies of this literary universe when I get the chance. But I know it’s going to drive me crazy having to sit through this introduction section of every book.

Complaining aside, this book is wonderful. The thing I just love about this literary universe is the characters. They’re all REAL. They’re all relatable, humans. They have personalities, wants and, desires. They make mistakes and atone for them. They blunder and then have to apologize for it. Characters you think are unredeemable later show their humanity and you realize they weren’t as bad as you initially thought.

I often find myself thinking that characters in interesting literary worlds could carry their own series. Well, this is basically proof of that concept. Nicky appeared in Bloody Mad as a super interesting side character. I cum to find out she’s got her own series and I could not be more excited to follow the rest of her journey.

The narrator is amazing. I’m glad a female narrator was chosen to give Nicky’s voice life. Aside from her saying “onvelope”, which isn’t a word; I enjoyed the narration very much.

Entertaining and Creative

I found Scared Shiftless to be a very well written book that kept me entertained and intrigued as Nyx a water elemental searched for Alice the vampire who stole her abilities and left her in human form. The characters are fun and quirky and are great for a smile or a sneer depending if you are rooting for the good guys or bad. Kasey Logan did an amazing job voicing the characters and bringing out their humanity or lack there of. I highly recommend this creative unique tale. I received this book from Audiobooks Unleashed and this is my honest unbiased review.
