Publisher's Summary

Stephanie Laurens authors USA Today best-selling historical romances such as A Rake's Vow and Devil's Bride. Lauren's Scandal's Bride is the hot and exciting third novel in her riveting Bar Cynster series.

Cynster men are invariably handsome rogues, and Catriona Hennessy, Scottish Lady of the Vale is well aware of their reputation. She is aghast when it is decreed by her guardian that she must marry the scandalous Richard Cynster within one week's time. Like her mother before her, Catriona is a beautiful, independent woman who needs no man to rule over her or the Vale. But what she does need is an heir--will the charming Richard Cynster be willing to give her what she wants? Facing unavoidable marriage, Richard savors the challenge of taming spirited Catriona. Simon Prebble's masterful narration of Laurens' tale will leave listeners feeling exhilarated.

Solid Story with Some Major Flaws

Overall I enjoyed the book, but I have two major issues with it. First is the origin of Richard’s birth. Twice Richard's father's infidelity is brought up and rationalized away as feeling sorry for her and it "accidentally" happens. I realize this is not about Richard, but repeatedly throughout the book we hear about the "Cynster Way", "to have and to hold", love, fidelity, fate. I find getting the story of Sebastian, especially after reading "A Promise in a Kiss" really detracts from Richard’s story. I think Stephanie Lauren was distracted the day she came up with this storyline and did a disservice to the entire series with this. She could have made Richard older than Devil and a by blow of Sebastian’s philandering ways PRIOR to his marriage to Helene. Devil would still be the Duke as he is legitimate and it would also make Helene’s EASY acceptance of the babe believable. As written, simply put, it is not, and it becomes like fingernails on a chalkboard every time the pompous "Cynster Way" is repeated.

My second major issue with the book is the ease and acceptance of using a date rape drug. Yes, I know that Richard is very willing and would be without the drug, but that really isn’t the point, is it? Had Richard used drugs to sleep with the Lady, I don’t think we would have been at all accepting of it. And she is trying to get pregnant and have his baby and then planning on never telling him? And this is after she spends the day with him and learns how much family means to him.

Perhaps I am just in a mood, as I generally don’t moralize when I read, but the afore mentioned plot points really spoiled the book for me. That being said, I love Richard and the rest of the book was enjoyable reading. However, like a cup of delicious starbucks coffee that someone has spit in, even though 99% is good stuff, the overall product is tainted.

He was not the scandal...she was

This is my favorite book. The passion and sex scenes in this series is starting to become more detailed. Not a problem for me, Simon Prebble makes everything sound so passionate anyway. Scandal's Bride has a twist in that she comes to him the first three times. I thought it was a wonderful twist. I like to hear the details of a marriage sometimes instead of always reading about the courtship. This was a great book!

Surprisingly Funny!!!

The first half of the book places the main characters in some really funny situations.I was listening in bed and had to get up. I laughed so hard the bed shook. Simon Prebble captures the rake's character perfectly. Loved it. Gonna buy the next one in the series.

another great one

I love this whole series - it is just the thing for my morning commute. Nothing serious, although the "romantic" scenes have distracted me from driving from time to time! :) The thing I love most about them though it the NARRATOR who is nothing short of amazing! There are 6 main men (and as many women) characters in this series, and he manages to give each of them and himself as narrator a slightly different voice. A true talent as I have been listening to audio books for a long time and I can tell you not many narrators can pull that off!

CYNSTER LETDOWN

Can't believe this was part of the Cynster series. There was absolutely No storyline/plot here; no character interest, no mystery, no quest, no fun secondary characters, no info about the heroine's religion....Nothing....Just rambling dialogue and many overly-typical (and mediocre) intimate scenes, along with tons of miscommunications, between two flatly written characters. Add to that the thousand-and-one times the author used the word "humph" and I could not wait for it to end.

Once again a winner!

Stephanie Laurens is consistently good. This is the story of Scandal and Catriona his witchy wife. A beautiful tale of passion and love that will keep you spellbound. Beautifully written and narrated with absolute perfection.

A FAVORITE !!!

This was the first Stephanie Laurens book I ever read. It was many years ago and I've been a loyal fan ever since. The narrator is very good. He makes you feel like you're part of the story.

Since When is Date Rape Romantic

Simon Pebble is a wonderful narrator but this book is just terrible.

I can look past a lot but the one thing that I absolutely cannot look past is a plot that tries to making rape romantic. And make no mistake, Catrina raped Richard. She drugged him in order to have sex with him and get pregnant by him without his knowledge. Had he done that, everyone would be screaming "RAPE". The woman doing the drugging does not make it any less of a RAPE!. It doesn't matter that he might have been willing if undrugged, she took his choice away and so, made it rape. She listened to him tell her earlier in the day that family was everything to him and then plotted to get pregnant by him and never tell him that he had a child. That's just reprehensible. If she had told him that she wanted to get pregnant by him but never wanted him to stay around, he would have said NO.

I am so disappointed in Stephanie Laurens for the plot in this book. She's so much better than this. It's not sexy to rape someone. And whether the victim is held down, tied up, coerced or drugged up, it's all rape when their capacity to make their own decision is taken away and they are made to have sex without consent.

Disappointed

I was incredibly Disappointed with this book. It’s really nothing but a bunch of poorly cobbled together sex scenes. I like a good sex scene as much as the next girl, believe me, but I also need to care about the characters. I honestly didn’t care about either one of them Because there was no real character development. The characters were both very flat and honestly had traits I found kind of annoying. I was just bored. I was turned off right away by that whole mysticism string that ran through the book, I just wasn’t believable, but I kept reading hoping it would get better. It didn’t and I honestly didn’t finish the book, I stopped with six hours left to go because I just didn’t want to invest any more time in it. I think this is the first novel I have ever I’ve abandoned, it’s unfortunate.

Fate sent him to Scotland.

Richard was summoned to Scotland for a reading of a Will. His Mother had left him something apparently.
There he learnt that the Laird who had passed wanted him to marry a Ward of his, otherwise the family would not have an inheritance at all. Given a week to make up his mind whether to or not. This Regency story is very delightful with all the family Cynsters members. I enjoyed the Audio.
