Publisher's Summary

From Ronald H. Balson, author of Once We Were Brothers, Saving Sophie is the powerful story of the lengths a father will go through to protect his daughter and an action-packed thriller that will take you on an unforgettable journey of murder and deception, testing the bonds of family and love.

Jack Sommers was just an ordinary accountant from Chicago - that is until his wife passed away, his young daughter was kidnapped, and he became the main suspect in an $88 million embezzlement case. Now Jack is on the run, hoping to avoid the feds long enough to rescue his daughter, Sophie, from her maternal grandfather, a suspected terrorist in Palestine. With the help of investigative team Liam and Catherine, and a new CIA operative, a secret mission is launched to not only rescue Sophie, but also to thwart a major terrorist attack in Hebron.

But will being caught in the crossfires of the Palestine-Israeli conflict keep their team from accomplishing the task at hand, or can they overcome the odds and save countless lives, including their own?

A Bit of Everything: Intrigue, Suspense, Romance

Where does Saving Sophie rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best I've listened to in a very long time. Exciting and gets you hooked from the very beginning.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. Although it opens with intrigue, the main character's story is slowly revealed. I couldn't wait to hear more, & knew there was an intriguing, complicated truth to be discovered.

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Reading this book would be good too, but Mr. Berman brings the story alive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, I was just "on the edge of my seat" during my listen.

Any additional comments?

This is a well crafted & suspenseful novel. It has an excellent plot with twists & turns.

Good story

Loved the storyline and characters but I was turned off by all the swearing. Wish there was an edited version. I would readily recommend this book to my friendly were it not for the mature language.

A fascinating mystery with an irritating victim

This would have been an easy 5 star had it not been for the hero/victim's bad judgements on just about every key decision and maybe the biggest case of self pity in modern literature. But wait, this is still a great story with remarkablly evil and brilliant bad guys!

The crimes are well conceived and devilishly manipulative. Despite the foolish victim, his friends are loyal and equally smart and resourceful. And they are as tough and savvy as he is pitiful.

Fred Berman's natural voice is not my favorite, but his accents have to be the most realistic I have ever listened to. Truly he is magnificent.

Is it worth a credit? Absolutely.

Dissapointed

I gave the book only three stars because while I liked the history part a lot. I found the narrative setting, the way the story was told, boring to unrealistic. Financial crime combined with basketball score fixing, combined with criminal mafia activity seemed to struggle in stretching to encompass (by the way) a kidnapping. The kidnapping was to be the central driver for the book. Along with historical animosities. There are many conflicts throughout the book; to describe their resolutions would be to write spoilers.

Jack lost a wife due to terrible disease. He promised her he would take care of daughter Sophie, but Sophie was kidnapped by extremist/potential terrorist Father-in-law. Even Dr. Father-in-law could not explain the invisible hand help he had in accomplishing the kidnapping. Jack, up to the time of the kidnapping, was a morally perfect person. The financial crime was understandable to support rescue efforts and return Sophie to Jack. The story proceeds in a fairly predictable way, but the writing is good except for the points where Jack retreats (repeatedly) into his mind to reflect on why bad things happen to innocent people (himself). He also spends a great amount of time rationalizing immoral, or at least unethical, methods to achieve moral, justifiable ends. These internal musings and flashbacks I found frustrating and boring.
I found the syrupy sweet conclusive statements that did not fit with the potential outcomes that made up an otherwise interesting story.

Fred Berman was good with the delivery of the story

Excellent as always!

I have become a fan of Ronald Balson! I've now read 3 of his books and they are all brilliant. His research into the era and story is so detailed. He never fails to keep me riveted. The narrator too is excellent taking off the German and Arabic accents perfectly of his various books. I certainly recommend this book.
