Publisher's Summary

The acclaimed, epic, and spellbinding fantasy by Hugo Award-winning author Matt Wallace about a utopian city with a dark secret...and the underdogs who will expose it, or die trying.

They call them Savages. Brutal. Efficient. Expendable.

The empire relies on them. The Savages are the greatest weapon they ever developed. Culled from the streets of their cities, they take the ones no one will miss and throw them, by the thousands, at the empire’s enemies. If they live, they fight again. If they die, there are always more to take their place.

Evie is not a Savage. She’s a warrior with a mission: to find the man she once loved, the man who holds the key to exposing the secret of the Savage Legion and ending the mass conscription of the empire’s poor and wretched.

But to find him, she must become one of them, to be marked in her blood, to fight in their wars, and to find her purpose. Evie will die a Savage if she has to, but not before showing the world who she really is and what the Savage Legion can really do.

This remarkable and captivating fantasy will take you on a journey into the heart of brutal battles, dire situations, and odds that seem too high to overcome.

Pitfalls of Communism and socialism

Great study to show many of the political systems we currently have in our world and the pitfalls associated with them. It’s packaged in a fantasy that is well written and reminiscent of Orwell or Ayn Rand

It could have been good, but wasn't

While descriptive language used and the scenes themselves were written well, the actual world building and motivations result in inconsistencies and a vagueness that just doesn't earn any of the conclusions offered.

Major Point of view character motivations are hidden until much later in the story. Character histories are never established that they could have the skills they possess. Major Point of view characters take drastic actions that was not established in anyway including a sociopathic murder.

The "good" guys always agree to plans with simple reasoning without any of the evidence that the characters earned their leadership by going through the effort of convincing many different factions and people. The difficult parts of a sneaky plan happen off screen with no details, but the easier part is described in detail. The Savage Legion is both the most dangerous weapon and the source of that legion is easily quashed if they revolt.

Epic adventure with 3 women!

Savage Legion
Savage Rebellion #1
By: Matt Wallace
Narrated by: Lameece Issaq

This is an epic adventure with three strong women characters, each with a different strength. One is a warrior that is pretending to be just a common street person that got caught up with everyone else that is used as battle fodder. She is to save a guy she knows and once loved but know is married to someone very important. Someone she promised to return him to. The other woman is disabled. She lives by her brains and wit.

All three are important in this story and I can't wait for the next book. There is a lot of violence, gore, corruption, cruelty, and injustice. I think these women hold the key to change.

I had a bit of trouble getting started in the book but then it just opened up and flew! I felt like I was there at times. I was anger, mad, sad, and worried. There is enough suspense to keep me up tight for sure!

The narrator was really good! No complaints there.

An excellent book and very good reading. strong women, well-written disabled characters, ENBY characters kicking butt all in a rich, well-developed world. I highly recommend it.

Still Angry About How Good This Is

It has now been several months since I finished this book and I am still angry about how good it is. This is epic fantasy for the modern age. The world is different but the corruption, bigotry, and cracks are all too familiar. We see the world through the eyes of three women who are all badass in their own way even if only one of them swings an axe. Everyone gets to be a complex and imperfect person and the plot threads are deftly woven and form a net around the reader subtly pulling in tighter until it forms a bodysuit around you and raises the runes in your skin making you one of the Savage Legion. Read this and immediately preorder the sequel, so you can burn with fury at reading a finely crafted epic fantasy and knowing you will not be able to craft its equal.

Savage Legion - SO GOOD

I was first introduced to Matt Wallace though an audio recording of his short story Sundae over at PodCastle many years ago. That's the story of a WARRIOR TEDDY BEAR who protects children. I then moved on to the Sin Du Jour series which is flavored in urban fantasy. I loved that series too.

Knowing that Savage Legion is an epic fantasy, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I knew it would be gritty and well written.

I didn't expect it to be so powerful, and so feminine!

This book is extraordinary. The writing, the plot, the characters...fantastic.

This was also my first book that I've listened to that was narrated by Lameece Issaq. It will not be the last. She did an incredible job.

YES- Fabulous start to a trilogy

I finished reading this months ago. The story & the characters have stuck with me. This is epic fantasy but not like anything I have read before- it's better & absolutely one of the best books of 2020. Evie, Lexi & Slider will draw you into their stories. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next.

Lameece Issaq is an incredible narrator & really adds to the adventure.
