Battle plans never survive first contact with the enemy....

John Eric Carver and Shrek, a retired SEAL war dog team, have created a safe haven in the high mountain desert. The remote former Boy Scout Camp seems perfect, with enough water and stored food to last years. Everything is in place to ride out the viral storm that is consuming the world.

Off the California coast, an aircraft carrier strike group carrying nearly 15,000 souls seeks refuge. There is talk of moving to an isolated island, untouched by the infected. That changes when they are given new orders to retake Los Angeles from the Variant hordes.

Survival will require courage and commitment. But most of all, it will demand sacrifice. Both groups thought they had escaped the apocalypse, but they are about to find out how wrong they are.

Incredible story!

I absolutely love this story. The tale is so gripping I find my anxiety level rising as the plot thickens. I want more.

It was going so well, and then.....

The first book was very good. The second book started off well. Then the author got lazy or stumped and started having characters do stupid stuff to move the story along. It’s the classic story killer. There are always ways to ways to move the story forward. It’s very sad when the author takes the easy road and just has people make idiotic mistakes that are completely out of character just to move the story along. It could have been a good story. It’s actually the same reason I stopped reading the main extinction cycle story line. There is so much promise with the story they started with. I would recommend you find a different story to get into. I will be getting a refund for this book.

Ok but this will be my last book for this author

I like the first bit this one remained me of the extinction books and I wasn’t a fan of those after the 3rd. Also again I didn’t like the dog dialogue and with a Dutch accent. But maybe some readers do just not my thing.

Great addition to the Extinction Cycle World!

If you love extinction cycle by Nicholas Sansbury Smith you will love this, if you haven’t read that yet this is a great addition to that world and you better be prepared to read both as the story backbone lies in Nicholas’s world which gives you an even better picture of everything all told together. This series gives us the story of Shrek and his handler, John Carver. Shrek is a war dog partnered with John, both were a SEAL team before they retired together. Since retirement John got a farm with room for Shrek to run and hunt while helping out with a Boy Scouts camp in Lost Valley.

When the apocalypse started John and Shrek join the camp counselors and some scouts and their families. This sequel divides between John and Shrek at the camp and the Camp director, Jen who happened to be visiting her naval boyfriend when the shit hit the fan. You also get the views of some marines and another SEAL who happens to be friends with Carver who get to be part of one of the major battles in Extinction Cycle. There is tons of action and you can see the pieces moving to bring us to a finale that’s very satisfying. While the tale could end here, there is plenty left to be said and a sting left that lets us know there is more to come for our heroes. Great read, well worth the credit.

Timeline

The sequence of events in this storyline are not matching up with the original storyline. Operation Liberty takes place after the Hemorrhage Virus has been wiped out leaving only a fraction of them alive as the Variants. But in this story, the virus is still raging and infections well after the ill fated operation. That isn't a small deviation from the established plot, it's a gaping hole.

Excellent

I sure hope there is a third book! These are fantastic stories and I have fallen in love with Shrek. Great work to the author. This is one of my favorite Extinction Cycle spin offs and Bronson Pinchot is great!

Too Much Fowl Language

Would have been better without excessive fowl language. "R" rated bedroom scenes weren't necessary either.

same has previous novel

The novel picks up where the previous novel ended has it shows the extremes soldiers and civilians do to protect the little they have left .

The start of the novel like really dragged on in military aspects of actions they toke to retake the city's. Do this gave the build up to the major battle it felt it could have been shorten.

The narrator felt he wasn't putting any work into female voices are there accents do he did start to putting effort to sound femsle nar the last 10 chs. Do he also had a lack of emotion in tone of chacthers voices when they where injured or felt sad I think he should have done better to make the chacthers more human.

Uneven story

The bones of this story are fine, no better or worse than most zombie apocalypse stories. It's some of the situations and plot lines that require more suspension of disbelief than I can muster. As an example, the behavior of the female characters. Mostly causing trouble for others and themselves, which they then have to be rescued from. Or mousy and useless one chapter, then suddenly holding a seal at knife point in the next? The women in my life are much more even-keeled than the characters in this story, but to each his own I guess. I got this book for free through audible. Had I paid for it, I probably would have returned it for a refund.

Narrator needs acting lessons

The story and characters are epic but it's so hard to get through the book with the narrator's inability to act. I'm sorry to be so blunt, the guy has a good voice but his voice fluctuations are so off. Maybe an acting voice coach?
