Publisher's Summary

She moved to Sandwich, Illinois, in search of a new life but ended up in a giant pickle. Sandwich represents hope for 20-year-old Maddie Buckner and Kyle, the 11-year-old brother Maddie wants to spring out of foster care. Then she loses her new job after less than an hour on the clock. It’s all Reuben the Jerk’s fault, and she’s determined to make him right the wrong. He does so, reluctantly, by giving her a job at his restaurant, The Sandwich Shop. Then crazy things start happening at the restaurant, and Kyle’s foster parents apply to adopt him. To stop it all, Maddie must learn the art of humbling herself and accepting the help God has arranged, risking her heart to Reuben in the process. And she’d rather eat a million corned beef on rye sandwiches than do that.

Critic Reviews

"Don’t let the light-hearted cover and title fool you. Krista Phillips’ spunky, rough-around-the-edges heroine may be 'tickle me' funny, but her faith journey offers more than a cute read. There is depth here, made all the more satisfying served up with a generous side of romance." (Tamara Leigh, author of Restless in Carolina and Dreamspell)
"Krista Phillips' book is much like a submarine sandwich - multi-layered and loaded with tasty delights. There's a little something for everyone: a light, quirky opening, and an ending that packs a punch. Yum!" (Janice Thompson, author of the Weddings by Bella series)
"Krista Phillips is a unique and entertaining new voice in contemporary Christian romance. She brings a fresh, young perspective to the genre and left me eager to read whatever she writes next." [Kaye Dacus, author of Stand-In Groom (Christy Award Finalist 2010), The Brides of Bonneterre series, and The Matchmaker series]

Sweet but disappointing at times...

As a lifelong Christian, I got so frustrated with Mattie and Reuben’s characters sometimes that I had to quit listening. While every Christian person is different, these two made some pretty horrific conclusions about life, as well as poor decisions at times. I’m afraid anyone considering becoming a believer in Jesus would run the other way after reading. Despite this, it was overall a sweet story and so I was glad I stuck with it.

Loved it

Loved the Christian story. I’d love to listen to more like it. A lite and easy flow of the story line.

Extrordinary

I read the reviews prior to listening to this book. I seen how some people criticized the relationship she had with God But as a Christian I found it Pure and Honest. I loved the story and the narrator did a great job!

Great story and narration

I loved that for once, neither one came from money. Their issues are those that can happen to real people. Also, even though they're both Christians, they are far from perfect, just like the rest of us. Note: I found both of Matthew West's songs, "Strong Enough" and "Survivors" on YouTube.

Pleasantly surprised! Highly recommend!

Not only was the story entertaining, but the narrator did a perfect rendition of the characters. This is a light hearted book, yet it deals with the pains life brings into the lives of many of us. The need for the forgiveness of God and the ability to forgive each other really speaks to the heart. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Unlikable mc

So many people help her and give her things, money, friendship, and she is so cranky. I don’t know why The H likes her.

Different

I’m not really religious so it was different. It gave me some insight to other people’s views on love and relationship. I liked the story in a sense where it was realistic. There really could be someone out there who is trying to get their life together to get their brother or sister out of foster care. However, I did roll my own eyes and said “give me a break” out loud at the fact that a 27 year old MALE who was in a relationship for 10 years was still a virgin. Yeah, that is not going to happen in this day and age no matter how religious you are. But, I still liked it. I would still recommend it.

Cute and sweet story, but…

I found this to be a nice story, well narrated and a sweet romance that did not come easy. The story follows characters through Christian faith and practices. I found the biggest flaw to be the lack of suspicion for Libby’s ( the on again off again ex) actions. Being Christian brings people together, show kindness and forgiveness, that doesn’t mean that you need to be totally blind to caddy and clearly underhanded actions. Rueban’s family saw it and despite her upbringing and repeated run ins with Libby, Maddie didn’t see through her actions either and believed her more than once. It got a little frustrating. Most love stories have obstacles but this story almost missed it’s HES because of stubborn judgements because they lacked faith in each other!
