Publisher's Summary

You can run from the grave, but you can't hide. Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her. But when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.

Being around him awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline kick of slaying vamps side by side to the reckless passion that consumed them. But a price on her head—wanted: dead or half-alive—means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard she tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever and that Bones won't let her get away again.

Jeaniene Frost, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, lives with her husband and their very spoiled dog in Florida. Although not a vampire herself, she confesses to having pale skin, wearing a lot of black, and sleeping in late whenever possible. And while she can't see ghosts, she loves to walk through old cemeteries. She also loves poetry and animals, but fears children and hates to cook.

Love in vein: listen to another Night Huntress novel.

What the Critics Say

“Proving that her first book was no fluke, Frost ratchets up the action and stirs up the suspense big time in her second Night Huntress novel. That said, it's the sizzling passion of her star-crossed lovers that really makes this book a genuine keeper!” (Romantic Times)

“This series is only getting better…between the exciting action scenes and the rekindled romance between Cat and Bones, I did not put this one down until the last page.” (Coffee Time Romance)

I'm actually a day old tart, filled with maple custard. Perhaps, this reads as a rational introduction to others, and you are deliberately misreading it, because, come on, maple custard.

    "Help, I'm dating a caricature."

It is well written with it's own style, and a good story arc. I don't usually buy this genre of books, and unfortunately, I do regret using a credit for this one. I'd just read Angelfall, and was looking for another love-hate relationship book, not a romance. There might have been a love-hate in the first book, but THIS book in the series doesn't have a love-hate relationship like it advertised on Goodreads, and it's definitely a romance. It's more like the main character hates herself for being in love, and feels realistically awkward about a veterinarian. Some of the one liners are funny. Something I'd want to see in an 80's B movie.

Cat is the center of attention to ALL men, like you see in a lot of YA novels, and vampire novels, come to think of it, and most things cycle back to her. Even centuries old undead break propriety to proposition Cat in the most inappropriate situations. "I know you're stabbing me, through the heart, but while you're down there..." (okay, it was never that bad, but it was close.)

The characters gets very English, men call her 'poppet' a lot. The dialogue can go over the top, and become a cameo; stylized. Like the situations you might dream up in your head before sleep, to explain why seven ninjas would attack you in a back alley, and what cliche lines they would serve up in the scenario. That said, it IS a good read, especially for people who appreciate Laurell K. Hamilton or Charlaine Harris, and it IS well-written, and fun.

    Any additional comments?

A great follow up to the first book. Honestly, the ending of the first book made me raise a few eyebrows. I was nervous about where Frost was taking the story, (Cat's Job) but she weaves it in perfectly. Four years has past in the story when we pick up book 2. Cat is very different than she was in first book - oh she is still her "punch first and ask questions later" self, but she is more confident, more assertive and definately the Head Bitch In Charge!

Again, like the first book - the plot seems almost secondary to the two main characters relationship - which Frost writes very well. Not to say the plot is not good - it is, but the plot only serves to build or tear down the relationship between Cat and Bones, which what makes it a good story for me. The plot moves along swiftly and with many new characters to make every turn of the page that much more interesting.

The only spoiler I will give is that I am about to begin Book 5 and they keep getting better and better!

"Second episode in a great series!"

This story includes Cat dealing with her new "government" job, her feelings and her separation from Bones which does not turn out to be permanent, of course. Their reunion is entertaining, as are the scenes of tension and fights with other vampires. Other characters provide worthy foils, and the fight scenes and drama of vampire politics is quite entertaining. The way Frost writes really makes you care about the characters, because the emotion and heart she so deftly weaves through the fights and intimate scenes resonates so genuinely. Another excellent narrative performance by Tavia Gilbert...she makes Cat and the others characters very real!

Would you consider the audio edition of One Foot in the Grave to be better than the print version?

This is the second book in the Night Huntress series. Although you could read this as a standalone, I think it would be hard to relate to what was going on without reading the first book Halfway to the Grave first.

In this story, we find Cat still hunting vampires, but as a federal agent with a team of guys that act as her backup. When we hear how Cat runs her team, I tend to think of this as more of a Lone Ranger type setup and wonder why she even has a team. When they are facing the bad guys it’s, ‘okay, I’m going in alone boys. Give me 30 minutes and then come in and clean up anything that is left.’ That is not teamwork! Cat is so cocky in this book. It is a good thing that she finally runs into Bones.

Although we do get into some good fighting scenes with Bones and get to discover some of his newly revealed Master Vampire skills, it is mostly Cat doing all the fighting in this story.

I really wish Cat had a bit more feeling in this story. She seemed like a walkin-talkin-pissed off-s.o.b. through the whole thing.

What about Tavia Gilbert’s performance did you like?

I think Tavia Gilbert did a great job with this book. Each character has a different voice and she does really well keeping them all separate. This is one of those narrators that can make you forget you are listening to just one person and not a whole cast of people.

    "Refreshing"

I came across this author by accident. And she has moved into my top 5 list.

I don't know if its the way the book is read by Tavia Gilbert, but I have fallen in love with Cat and Bones.

I enjoy her spin on vampires and ghouls.

    I highly recommend this series.

It's a good story, with good characters. It grabs and keeps your attention. It's just the terrible English accent that's given the Bones character, it truly is awful!

    "One Foot In The Grave"

I've been looking forward to listening to this book for a while. I snapped it up as soon as it came out and finished it in a day. This is the second book in the Night Huntress Series and is every bit as gripping and fast-paced as the first. It was great to see Bones again. For someone like me who's read a lot of vampire fiction, he really is a breath of fresh air. One thing this book had over the first was that the Author seemed to have a better idea of when detail became too much detail. There were a couple of times in the previous book when I was given more information than I wanted, especially during some of the fight scenes. I didn't find that this time round. There were a couple of stomach churning moments, but as they were necessary to the story I could cope. The sex scenes were few as usual, which I like, though one was a little on the explicite side. All in all, if you like your romance with a healthy dose of action and vampires thrown in, this book is for you.

It has Love, Fights, Supernatural and good one liners! i love the way Tavia Gilbert voices the people.
