Publisher's Summary

Go beyond the film with a novelization featuring new scenes and expanded material.

As the shadows of the Empire loom ever larger across the galaxy, so do deeply troubling rumors. The Rebellion has learned of a sinister Imperial plot to bring entire worlds to their knees. Deep in Empire-dominated space, a machine of unimaginable destructive power is nearing completion. A weapon too terrifying to contemplate...and a threat that may be too great to overcome.

If the worlds at the Empire's mercy stand any chance, it lies with an unlikely band of allies: Jyn Erso, a resourceful young woman seeking vengeance; Cassian Andor, a war-weary rebel commander; Bodhi Rook, a defector from the Empire's military; Chirrut Ïmwe, a blind holy man; his crack-shot companion, Baze Malbus; and K-2SO, a deadly Imperial droid turned against its former masters. In their hands rests the new hope that could turn the tide toward a crucial Rebellion victory - if only they can capture the plans to the Empire's new weapon.

But even as they race toward their dangerous goal, the specter of their ultimate enemy - a monstrous world unto itself - darkens the skies, waiting to herald the Empire's brutal reign with a burst of annihilation worthy of its dreaded name: Death Star.

Great story but not well written

I enjoyed the movie and normally the novels tied to movies are good as they give more details. However for thus book I just didn't find the additional information that interesting. Also the author's effort to explain Jyn's emotions was like a scraping thing scraping at my brain

Shame about the sound effects

Great story, but its a shame that the sound effects make listening difficult in places. Screeching sounds in places drowns out the narrative .

An enjoyable listen

Would you listen to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story again? Why?

Yes, I find Jonathan Davis a very good narrator and the story was enjoyable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?

...the bit where (spoilers)

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Darth Vader Strikes Back Harder.....

Any additional comments?

Yeah,, why won't audible UK offer me the ability to buy the Marc Thompson performed Unabridged Timothy Zahn 'Thrawn Trilogy' of 'Heir to the Empire', 'Dark Force Rising' and 'The Last Command' Audiobooks that are available to buy from the Audible US store?

I kept thinking about the movie!

If you could sum up Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, detailed, captivating

What other book might you compare Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to, and why?

I think its good enough to stand on its own I’m still getting into this genre in book form, no comparison yet.

What about Jonathan Davis’s performance did you like?

The storytelling was very deep and the added sound effects really completed the atmosphere. Visualising what was being said really brought back memories from the movie.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The voice acting for the droid, k2. It felt real and authentic.

Any additional comments?

The whole time I was listening to this book I kept thinking about the movie which I have seen twice already. I started to remember each scene in detail and now I’m eager to see it again.

Dramatic

This tragic story is beautiful in itself and the companion book is beautifully written, with additional scenes and reflections that are only hinted at during the movie.
I have to say, however, that while I enjoyed the story immensely, i would have preferred it to be a simple reading. The background noise and different sound effects, coupled with the overenthusiastic style of the narrator were simply too much for me personally. It took me a few minutes to be able to concentrate and take this seriously. All in all still a terrific piece I wouldn't want to miss.

better than the force awakens

Where does Rogue One: A Star Wars Story rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jyn, simply because she had a tragic past and was trying to find her way in the universe

Which scene did you most enjoy?

the climax, full of action with great sound effects

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Rogue One The Force Awakens

Great book

This is a very good book that has an in depth story allowing you to know a lot more about what is going on in the characters minds when they are do certain tasks. It is also the first audiobook that I have listen too that has sound effects. I would definitely recommend buying this book to listen too due to the fact it is a great read.

An excellent storey and performance.

Storey and performance were both excellent, the use of sound effects and music really bringing the narration to life.

Okay, enjoyable but not amazing.

I feel like the novelisation misses some things though, K2SO's sarcasm for one is very dull, the Epilogue didn't feel nearly as epic as the film did either. Jonathan Davis does a great job as always, but I wish they'd use more SFX from the films, for example Vaders breathing. Overall: Not necessary for extra snippets of story like other novelisations, it was good, but the film was better I think.

My ALL TIME favourite Star Wars Film!

I remember the awe, wonder and excitement of seeing the original Star Wars film on the BIG screen (the cinema not an HD TV!)

The first was then the most amazing Sci-Fi film at that time. The middle was a filler the 3rd was again brilliant!

Then came the Prequels..... ugh! Better effects but rubbish otherwise.

Now we have the final ones, all flash and no substance I even turned down a chance to see the latest one for free......

Rogue One was released in a time when every new film is just a paint by numbers copy of the last with different scenery and actors. I did not see it until long after release on DVD. THE BEST grittiest most story rich in the franchise very cleverly sequed into the point between Revenge of the Sith and New Hope.

Now I have the Audio production and it is way better even than the film. So much more detail, so much more emotion and depth that the film could ever convey. Absolutely had to listen to the whole book in one sitting (thank goodness we have portable listening devices).

BRILLIANT!

If you are an ardent Star Wars fan and do not have this audio production do your ears and your imagination a favour and down load a copy to your library and immerse yourself!

Better than the movie

The original Star Wars was a space-faring Boys Own Adventure story and, while the second trilogy (episodes 1, 2 and 3) forgot his and focussed more on galactic politics and teen angst, Disney has restored Star Wars to its former glory.

The expanded novel universe of Star Wars, like many popular film and television tie-ins, is young adult fiction that should, nonetheless, appeal to the greater masses. Based on the film, rather than the other way around, the novel by Alexander Freed is a relatively accurate depiction of what’s seen on the big screen. Where books succeed over films however, is the added depth of characters’ inner thoughts and deeper motivations. Freed’s novel excels in this, making more sense of some of the dubious character decisions depicted in the film.

Jonathan Davis narrates the audiobook of Freed’s novel with the aid of sound effects and music, making it just as exciting and breathtaking as the film. The action levels are high and the descriptive prose of the book comes to life under Davis’ excellent narration.

This is one audiobook that is read quite slowly, possibly due to the targeted audience, but kicking the playback speed up to 1.25x or more only enhances the thrills.

The action in the audiobook, surprisingly, feels faster-paced than the film because of all the extra details thrown in about the characters and events. It’s an exciting listen that is sure to please everyone, not just Star Wars fans. Rogue One is a prequel story to the original 1977 Star Wars film, so it’s a great starting point for newcomers to the franchise who won’t require any background knowledge to enjoy this new Girls Own Adventure story.

A worthy transition from screen to page

Fans of the movie will enjoy this audiobook, which builds on the movie with some excellent, in-depth storytelling by the author. At times it could be a little too in-depth - characters' internal dialogue could go on a bit too long and could slow down the pace particularly during action sequences - but overall it added a genuine richness to the story as told in the movie. There are neat additions in the form of document trails interspersed through the story.
The performance by Jonathan Davis was excellent with great voices, expressiveness, drama and characterisation. I found the sound effects distracting at first but you get used to them.

Enhance your Rouge One experience

I liked the movie. In particular I found how this sub-story avoided the childish elements of other Star Wars movies and even had a tragic ending. I saw this audiobook and thought it might fill in a few gaps in the story. Wow was I happily surprised. Listening to the excellent performances of this audio book was captivating. Suddenly the Rouge One story was more than interesting. It was emotional it was intriguing it was exciting it was tragic it had real heros. This audiobook elevates and enhances the quality of the Rogue One story to amazing level. If you liked the movie but felt it could have been better or there was more to the Rogue One story then you will really enjoy this excellent audio book as it expands and enhances the Rogue One story to legendary status.

And not a Light Sabre in sight... Great...

Any additional comments?

Great Story that blends superbly into the Star Wars universe, this tale lacks for nothing and it was refreshing to not have a Jedi, or a Light Sabre duel anywhere to be seen... Vastly superior to the movie (and I loved the movie), a really great read even for those not fussed by the Star Wars Universe.

Rich in detail

The book has 5 times the information than the movie does. And explores Jins mental state beautifully and unseen in the movie.

Like the first book this series has wonderful sound effects from doors opening, spaceship, blaster fire, and the wind and birds of planets. A masterpiece of an audiobook.
