Publisher's Summary

Being in love with your best friend is hard.

Henry’s the odd man out. All his friends are settling down, and his reputation as the hook-up king of London seems more like a curse than a blessing, these days. Especially when it keeps photojournalist Ivo, his best friend and the brilliant man he’s loved since they were 15, at arm’s length. But that’s where Ivo wants him, right? Putting aside his feelings, Henry decides to give up casual sex and look for the real deal.

After all, he has no chance with Ivo. Or, does he?

Henry is everything to Ivo. Best friend, soul mate, the one person who has never let him down. The one person he is loyal to above everything and everyone. But Henry’s in a box marked best friend, and that’s where Ivo’s kept him for nearly 20 years, despite steadily falling in love with the gentle man. And besides, why would Henry want to date Ivo? Burned out and injured, he’s the walking embodiment of damaged.

Distance has helped Henry and Ivo keep a lid on their attraction, but when they find themselves in the same city for a change -Ivo hurt and needing assistance and Henry more than willing to provide it - the two best friends grow closer than ever, forcing a realization and a decision.

Risk their friendship for their hearts? Or can they have both?

From the best-selling author of Rule Breaker and Deal Maker comes a tender love story about two best friends who are perfect for each other, and always have been...if only they knew it. This is the third book in the Mixed Messages series, but it can be listened to as a stand-alone.

The Queen of Snark Reigns Supreme!!

I read this book in one sitting, staying up until 3am to do so. Like Morton's previous books in this series, it was AWESOME! Unlike her other books, it was a bit angstier.

Joel Leslie was phenomenal in his performance of Ivo and Henry. He is my fave when doing British (or French) accents!!

There was great balance between the feels and the funny. These two MCs are ex stepbrothers and best friends. They love each other. Both are in love with the other, but will not put their friendship at risk by trying for more. Angst, angst, angst...they go for more. HEA.

Characters from the previous two books in the series make appearances and we meet Silas, brother of MC Henry, who stars in the next book , Oz (HILARIOUS!!!).

This one is a must for Lily Morton fans...and who wouldn't be? She's writing some of the BEST and FUNNIEST romance out there!

Beautiful romantic comedy with lots of heart

Story
This can be listened to as a standalone but it’s the 3rd book in the series and best if you started from book 1 of mixed messages. This story is about Henry and Ivo who briefly grew up as stepbrothers when Henry’s father married Ivo’s mother. Henry is a successful family lawyer who’s been playing the field but had finally gotten tired and ready to settle down except his deepest desire is for his best friend Ivo. However, Ivo’s vocation as photojournalist takes him to dangerous locale and his stays with Henry only lasts for a short time between assignments.

Henry may look soft but he’s tough inside. Ivo may look tough but his insecurities hold him back from taking risks with his heart. The story starts out in a melancholy tone peppered with wry humor but gets lighter progressively in the story as our two main characters find each other and ease into each other’s lives again and found an added dimension to their relationship that they’ve both been craving for and finally got the courage to risk their future.

The string of attempted dates are hilarious as was the night Henry and Dylan enjoyed Dean’s gift. There’s pain, angst, and desire to knock the MCs’ heads together but I laughed out loud at all the humor that laced through the story and I broke down and cried when Ivo brought out Henry’s photo and shared his story with a fellow passenger.

Simply, this story is a beautiful ode to love — best friends to lover, between brothers, between best friends, and between work friends.

Narration
Joel’s narration is pitch perfect and fantastic. He lives and breathes the characters into vivid life with his performance. Each character voice is distinct.

Summary
Wonderful story and narration. For anyone who’s looking for a romantic comedy that’s wonderfully written and performed, this is it. Strongly recommended.

I liked it, but...

Argh! I think this is a case of too high expectations. I read the first two books in this series and loved them. And there was a lot to love here, too, don't get me wrong. But as much as I liked Henry and Ivo, I spent 80% of the book wanting to strangle them :(

Yes, I get why they were acting the way they did, but it went for too long. And when they finally have sex... it felt cheap. I know it was supposed to be hot, but for me, it wasn't. And the way they used sex to avoid talking annoyed me to no end.

It was lovely to revisit the characters from the previous books, and the banter and humour was as funny as always, and the end was really great, so, all in all, I really liked it, even with the amounts of frustration that made me feel :P

Now, Joel Leslie's narration... I still have the same problem with his narration that I always have: he has only a couple of voices, and in this book, with the characters from the other books having such a big presence, it was even more evident. You can only say who was talking by the context :( It's a real shame, because I like his voice and style.

Another 5 Star Read for Lily

This series couldn’t possibly get better, Henry and Ivo are perfection incarnate. Lost souls that stuck together and never separated. I just couldn’t have wished for a better best friends to lovers book.
Definitely a MUST read; not only that but you get to know more about the couple that stole our heart initially. Gabe is amazing as always and Asa is EVERYTHING! Plus, this makes you appreciate Silas’ HEA even more.

Fantastic!!

I can't begin to explain how wonderful this story was! There were highs, there were lows and it was so HOT! Joel Leslie Froomkin can't top this work. (or can he?) But first and foremost, it takes excellent content to make it happen. great job. I wish I could start it again for the first time.

AMAZING!!!

I have been waiting for Henry's story and it was so worth the wait. I found Risk Taker beautifully layered with emotions. Henry and Ivo have such a long and rich history together. They have been each other's person and support system since they met as teenagers. Because of this they are both leary about changing their relationship. What if it doesn't work out? Will they lose each other for good?

I really enjoyed the slow burn of this romance. Watching Henry and Ivo explore what they truly are meant to be to each other was amazing. The snark that Lily Morton is so good at enhances everything about these two. The history that they have enriches their love so much. I found myself laughing, sighing, crying and smiling. Everything I could want in a book.
Joel Leslie does an amazing job of bringing this story to life! I will definitely be giving this a relisten!

Excellent

This is the 3rd book in the Mixed Messages series by Lily Morton. I loved Henry's story and have been waiting for the audio version for a while. This is probably my favorite in the series. I wasn't crazy about Joel Leslie's narration of this one, I felt like he was overacting in much of it. This would not keep me from purchasing the next book in the series however!

Henry Ivo Rollercoaster

This story was just ok for me, there were parts I loved and was on the edge of my seat and then there were parts that I was a bit bored. Risk Taker was my third book by this author and I loved 2 previous books so very much that this book was a bit disappointing in comparison. I liked the characters, both Henry and Ivo were interesting and adorable in their unrequited love. I enjoyed the parts of the story where they were honest and intimate with each other, the flashbacks to their childhood were sweet and heartbreaking. I didn't love the back and forth between them and miscommunications and running from their feelings. Narrator did a good job with the story and characters and made this book an enjoyable listening experience. Overall this was a good listen and I am looking forward to more books by this author/narrator team.

Stepbrothers in love!

Instant attraction and unrequited love between two stepbrothers. I loved the accents and their journey through the years. They are both sarcastic and hilarious, but they hide their real feelings for a long time. I think their HEA was definitely deserved. I’d like to read Sila’s story next.

Amazing

Lily Morton and Joel Leslie are a match made in heaven. I love the snark and comedy in Lily’s books and Ivo and Henry provide plenty, Joel expertly portrays both characters and catches the snark so well. There’s a lot of emotions in this book which Joel also provides well.

Best one of the mixed messages books!

Lily Morton's books are FANTASTIC. The story is wonderful and listening to it reminded me of how much I loved Henry and Ivo. They are my favorite of the Mixed Messages couples. The British humor, and Henry's intense longing are really what make the book for me. It's captured perfectly.

The narration is pretty good. Some of the accents drove me a bit batty at times. The French is a bit mauled... Although they got the pronunciation of Ivo correct which was a major plus! Overall the enthusiastic delivery makes up for the occasional moment of not knowing what is happening with the accents.

Best one!

I think this is my favourite of the series, I loved the struggles they go through, I love the friendship and loyalty they have since the age of 15. Ivo and Henry are the absolutely perfect couple, been there for each other to help fight their battles. Joel Lesley did an amazing job with the emotions portrayed it this story they made they hilarious bit even more funny and the sad bits that bit more emotional. I'm hoping we get a book about Silas and him finding an HEA

Amazing

Joel Leslie did such an incredible job in bringing one of my favourite books to life. He bought such a wonderful vulnerability into Henry and Ivo- and his Ivo in particular was just spot on! I love, love, loved this, and it will be re listened to many times in the future! 💜
