Story
In October 1947, after a summer-long drought, fires break out all along the Maine coast, from Bar Harbor to Kittery, and are soon racing out of control from town to village. Five months pregnant, Grace Holland is left alone to protect her two toddlers when her husband, Gene, joins the volunteer firefighters. Along with her best friend, Rosie, and Rosie's two young children, Grace watches helplessly as their houses burn to the ground, the flames finally forcing them all into the ocean as a last resort.

At a New England boarding school, a sex scandal is about to break. Even more shocking than the sexual acts themselves is the fact that they were caught on videotape. A Pandora's box of revelations, the tape triggers a chorus of voices - those of the men, women, teenagers, and parents involved in the scandal - that details the ways in which lives can be derailed or destroyed in one foolish moment.

At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

Disappointing
What would have made Rescue better?
This story was way too slow and I was hooked in by the characters at all.
What was most disappointing about Anita Shreve’s story?
If you are looking for entertainment like 'The Pilot's Wife' in this book, you will be sorely disappointed. I love 'The Pilot's Wife,' and rate it one of my all time favourites. The characters in 'Rescue' are blandly constructed and the storyline just never takes off. Webster, the central character, is flat and is difficult to connect with. Basically, it's a bit of a love story without the endearing characters.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Narrator was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Rescue?
All of them.
Any additional comments?
Don't waste your credits or time.

Couldn't switch the 'off' button
Would you listen to Rescue again? Why?
I loved this book. It took me a couple of chapters to embrace the accents of the characters but I'm Australian! Once I was hooked I just wanted to listen to the whole book and had to strictly limit my listening time as I was on holidays and didn't want to finish too quickly!
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the characters and just thought the story was a bit different!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I thought the voice narration was irritating at first but after chapter 2 I really loved them!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It did make me cry
Any additional comments?
Would definitely recommend

Disappointing
I have enjoyed Anita Shreve's books but found this one to be predictable and with nothing new to say. It was not helped by a poor performance by the reader. She is unable to do male voices, so compensates but shouting whenever a male character is speaking.

Irritating narration!
I gave the story 4 stars because I love Anita Shreve! However, I didn't get to find out what happened after chapter 2 because the narration completely put me off. To me it sounded like every male voice was harsh & forced (& the same) & totally interfered with my ability to hear the story. Frustrating.

Not quite as good as the best.
I am a huge fan of Anita Shreve. This story was engaging but the plot lacked some of the interesting twists and turns of the best novels. The reader is good but not at her best with male voices.

Story
At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.
