Editorial reviews

"If you like mayhem, madness, and suspense, Repeat Offender is the book to read. It's a provocative journey into a world one rarely uncovers, with shocking twists and turns...." (Aphrodite Jones, New York Times best-selling author of Cruel Sacrifice)

Publisher's summary

Millions in stolen property, revolting sex crimes, and murder-for-hire were all in the mix for a Las Vegas police detective, as he toiled to take Sin City's most prolific criminal off the streets for good. Detective Bradley Nickell brings you the inside scoop on the investigation, arrest, and conviction of the most prolific repeat offender Las Vegas has ever known.

Daimon Monroe looked like an average guy, raising a family with his diffident schoolteacher girlfriend. But just below the surface, he was an accomplished thief with an uncontrollable lust for excess. His criminal mind had no bounds - he was capable of anything given the proper circumstances. You will be revolted by Monroe's amassed wealth through thievery; his plots to kill Detective Nickell, a judge, and a prosecutor; and the physical and sexual abuse to which Monroe subjected his daughters.

Thoroughly enjoyable true crime tale

Bradley Nickell's recounting of the long investigation and prosecution of a prolific serial criminal is an absorbing read. Nickell takes the reader through the entire investigation, prosecution, innumerable legal maneuvers, with a precision and detail which provides a true sense of what it would be like to work in law enforcement.

The story is about a career burglar who might possibly have been the most productive thief in history, committing hundreds upon hundreds of burglaries, stealing millions of dollars worth of property, and while clearly an intelligent and cunning indvidual, foolishly kept a huge amount of his haul in his own home, along with numerous storage units. By the time he was caught in just one relatively minor break-in, he had accumulated over 19 felony convictions... but that represented only a tiny fraction of the thefts he committed.

Brickell's narrative paints a vivid picture of the sociopathology of this criminal, his endless attempts to escape from his legal predicament, and the escalation of his crimes to a conspiracy to attempt to murder Nickell himself, along with the judge in the case, and the prosecutor.

Perhaps the most unique, and pleasurable part of this book was, surprisingly, the narrator. Kevin Pierce was a superb selection for this project... his voice is perfectly suited to portray a first person narrative of a police officer and detective, sounding vaguely reminiscent of Jack Webb, without the corny idioms.... or, possibly, Howard Morris. It was very hard to keep in mind that the narration wasn't done by Nickell himself, which is a mark of excellence for any narrator who works on a first person non-fiction story.

In fact, for my next book, I intend to try one of the other books narrated by Pierce... it's hard to believe, but I think I have actually become a fan of a narrator!

Overall, it's a great story, and a great read. For true crime fans, you won't be disappointed.

True Crime

What did you love best about Repeat Offender?

With non-fiction the story is what it is. This author obviously knew he had a good story to share and paired up with an excellent narrator, he came up with a winner. Because I work in the criminal justice field I had an appreciation for this story and the resources it took to bring this criminal to justice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Detective Nickell. Even though Monroe's actions created countless victims, Nickell's perseverance, experience, intelligence, and compassion eliminated future victims and made the Las Vegas community a safer place.

What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?

Everything. Pierce was a perfect narrator for this story. He was convincing with a perfect pace and spot on inflection.

Any additional comments?

This book was provided by the narrator at no cost in exchange for an honest review.

Sin City SIN

While this is categorized as a true crime book (which it certainly is), it also has some of the aspects of a memoir. The author gives the facts of the case, and the events surrounding the investigation and trial objectively, but this is also a personal story, and the author also gives his own feelings and thought processes. In many ways, this personal touch makes this very interesting book unique. Granted, I would have preferred the story without the editorial comments, especially those involving the author’s religious beliefs, but, this is in the nature of a memoir …and these comments were seldom distracting.

The narrator was just about perfect for this book, and did an excellent job in all aspects of narration. His presentation was well paced, and with enough emotion to keep the book from becoming as dry as, say, a police report. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars, and the narrator 5 stars.

What a riveting story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, and I have. It's a fascinating story of determination, dedication, and compassion

Which scene was your favorite?

When Detective Nickell is facing down Monroe in court

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I couldn't wait to find out what happened, but life called, so I had to read it in several segments.

Any additional comments?

I was impressed with the narrator’s ability to bring alive the words of author Bradley Nickell as he tells the story of the dedicated team of law enforcement persons in their relentless pursuit of Damon Monroe. Villains like Monroe are dangerous, and I tip my hat (If I wore one that is) to the team that brought him down. My heart went out to his children, who will forever have to bear the scars of his abuse and lifestyle to which he subjected them. The story especially fascinated me as I used to live in Las Vegas. Listening as the narrator describes the author’s words, put me right back in the city. The author tells of the ordeal in the form of a story that is interwoven with facts of the case—which, in my opinion, makes the book interesting to both fiction and non-fiction readers. In this book, the author shares both his trials and triumphs of bringing this man and his accomplices to justice, at the same time showing great empathy for their victims. He ends the story with some thought provoking views and opinions that really get the readers thinking about our society—all of which I heartily agree. I highly recommend this story to both true-life crime enthusiasts and mystery readers. I felt a connection with this author, whether it came from having lived in the same city, our connection on Twitter (which is where I first learned of this novel), our shared faith in God, or the tenderness he showed toward the people he swore to protect-I’m not sure. I only know I hope to see more from this author.

Truth IS Stranger Than Fiction

As an early fan of LAPD Detective Joseph Wambaugh (The New Centurions, 1971), I had yet to come across another author of true crime who could keep me riveted with a captivating story...until now.

Las Vegas Police Detective Bradley Nickell, with co-author Warren Jamison, recounts the tenacious investigation and arrest of career criminal, Daimon Monroe, following with the court trials and multiple life sentences. I was fascinated by all the details from transcripts, frustrated by the audacity of the defendant (and the defense attorney) and relieved by the final outcome. I don't know which shocked me more-- the revelation of torture and sexual abuse of his own daughters or the conspiracy to kill Nickell, the judge and prosecuting attorney.

Narrator Kevin Pierce gave an exemplary performance, capturing the nuance of each character. (I'll definitely be looking for more of his narrations!)

Ultimately just a long dissertation of a court cas

Narrator saved me from shutting it down early. The dialogue from the court cases gets exhausting. Not much else about it.

Entertaining and Enthralling True Crime

What did you love best about Repeat Offender?

My favorite part of Repeat offender was the amount of thoroughness with which the story is presented.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The modus operandi of Monroe as he manages so many crimes over such a period of time, and the care with which his prosecutors handled the case.

Which scene was your favorite?

There weren't really any scenes I didn't enjoy, which resulted in a fairly even experience great at every turn.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

The most interesting part of this book for me was the existence of a repeat offender program and how that group interacted with the rest of the law enforcement groups.

Any additional comments?

I received this for free in exchange for an honest review and found myself rather entertained, I definitely recommend others listen to this.

Incredible and We'll Written

a very very well-written True Crime novel.
I believe the narrator was probably one of the best because I could tell the difference between characters and that makes a book more interesting!

Have you listened to any of Kevin Pierce’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, typical top shelf performance on the part of Mr. Pierce!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the best part was hearing how the prosecutor was steadfast in his beliefs in our court system and his spirituality

Long and dry...

Maybe a story for a long long ride accross the USA, but not if u want to stay away. Over all just too long and drawn out. And Kevin piercing, steady, strong voice great if reading a log or law book. But not a good match for this story. But then i don't know who would have been..
